From the Saxons and Normans to the present, the text traces the changing roles, privileges, and responsibilities of the English nobility. The author examines the concept of nobility as an inherited quality of gentle birth as well as the ways in which it could be acquired through service or other means. The work also considers the legal and social distinctions between nobility and the rest of society, including issues of precedence, titles, and heraldry. Ultimately, the book provides a comprehensive and detailed account of the evolution and significance of nobility within English society. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

First edition. Brydall, John (1635? - 1705?). Jus imaginis apud anglos; or the law of England relating to the nobility & gentry. 8vo. [16], 76, [4, including publisher's advertisements and final blank]pp. Folding table. Lacking frontispiece. London: John Billinger . . . and Geo. Dawes, 1675. 164 x 110 mm. Sheep ca. 1675, gilt spine with leather label, corners repaired, minor stains on front cover. Some edges a bit frayed, but very good. Early annotations (penmanship practice, arithmetical calculations) on folding table and final leaves. Bookplate. First Edition. Brydell, a lawyer and secretary to Charles II's Master of the Rolls, published a number of treatises on British law, including this one on the legal privileges enjoyed by the English nobility and gentry. "Generally, the works ascribed to him reflect a very wide range of jurisprudential expertise, covering such topics as the laws and customs of London, the rights and privileges of the nobility and gentry, conveyancing, bastardy, and lunacy. They also indicate a strongly conservative and pro-monarchical frame of mind" (Oxford Dictionary of National Biography). .
