The single work in this volume is reprinted in full for the first time since the edition of 1684. Partly becuase The History of the League has not been widely available, students have generally ignored Dryden's long translation from the French of Loyis Maimbourg. Although this volume is properly concerned with Dryden, it also charts Maimbourg's literary career and clarifies his narrative by providing maps and explaining his assumptions about historical process, church and state.
