John Lipscomb Johnson grew up on a Virginia plantation and later served as a teacher, Baptist minister, leader, and speaker, and father. He was born in Virginia in 1835, served in the Civil War as a chaplain, and in 1860 he married Julia Toy. They had eight children and this autobiographical sketch was written in response to a request from his grandson in 1910.

First edition, 1/500 copies (unnumbered). 8vo. 387 pp. Illustrated from photographs, portraits, old manuscripts and documents, etc., plates, endpaper maps. A graduate of the University of Virginia before the war, Johnson served as chaplain to the 17th Virginia Infantry from first Manassas through Seven Days in 1862, was wounded, and spent the final three years of the war in Lynchburg, ministering to several churches, including an African-American one; his post-war life was spent primarily at various educational institutions in Mississippi. Inscribed by the editor to Frank Klingberg, a fellow historian at the University of North Carolina. Very good.
