John Loudon McAdam (1756- 1836) was a Scottish civil engineer and road-builder He was the inventor of "macadamization", an effective and economical method of constructing roads This copy of his 9th edition of "Remarks" of 1827, bound with "Observations" of 1827, is in generally good condition, showing its age with a tear and slight loss at the top of the spine, some scuffing of the cover and age browning of the end papers The binding however is still very sound and the text shows only slight browning It includes a foldout table of Bristol Turnpike Roads at the end of "Observations" Noteworthy however, is that this copy was owned by Francis Goodwin (1784â"1835) a well-known English architect who designed a number of churches and civic buildings in the early 1800's, and is both signed by Goodwin on the title page and has his personal bookplate on the inside cover (See photos).
