5 volumes. 8vo., (8 2/8 x 5 inches). 12 fine folding engraved maps (some offsetting and spotting), 3 plates, engraved tailpiece at end of volume III. Contemporary rose tiger-striped calf, gilt, each cover decorated with a fine gilt border of dot tools, and each spine gilt-ruled in six compartments with green morocco lettering-pieces in two. "first in war, first in peace, and first in the hearts of his countrymen" (Henry Lee) First English edition and a HANDSOME COPY. Published simultaneously in Philadelphia. Marshall, who was the fourth chief justice of the United States, and whose family had been associated with Washington's since the Revolution, wrote this extensive and best known early biography of Washington, during the early years of his tenure in the Senate. The preparation of an abridged second edition occupied his attention for much of the rest of his life. As with all truly great biographies Marshall charts not only the life of Washington, but places him in the broad perspective of the times in which he lived and beyond: beginning with a brief history of the discovery and settlement of America, and ending with the eulogies of the grieving but grateful nation. Howes M317; Sabin 44788. Catalogued by Kate Hunter.
