McLean had served in Congress with Morrow. Appointed by President Andrew Jackson, McLean is best remembered today as the senior Supreme Court justice who dissented in Dred Scott v. Sanford, one of only two justices to do so. During the 1850s, when Chief Justice Roger B. Taney was frequently ill, McLean presided over the Court. In this letter, McLean replies to a query about Morrow from Robert F. Adair and appends a four-page memoir of his late friend. (Robert F. Adair of Maysville, Kentucky may be silversmith Robert Farris Adair [1833-1907], whose papers are held by the Filson Historical Society.) Justice McLean writes: "Many years ago I was well acquainted with Mr. Morrow, having served with him in Washington, and lived in the same county with him in Ohio."
