Obtrusive staining to endpapers; faded antiquarian ink inscription on front free endpaper; pencil writing on both front and rear endpapers; additional pencil writing on half-title leaf; toning/foxing strongest on several initial and rear leaves; interior text pages have varied foxing/toning and light moisture stains. Binding is firm. Book now presented in a clear Dura-Lar (polyester film) sheet forming a dj which aids the book's shelf presence. Landmark work by British-born American philosopher and semanticist Alexander Bryan Johnson. Johnson first published his ideas regarding language and semantics in his 1828 work THE PHILOSOPHY OF HUMAN KNOWLEDGE, OR A TREATISE ON LANGUAGE (New-York: G. & C.
