Otello is Giuseppe Verdi's penultimate opera, a lyrical drama in four acts set to a libretto by the composer-poet Arrigo Boito after Shakespeare's tragedy, and stands among the supreme achievements of Italian opera. Composed after a long creative silence and patiently coaxed from the aging Verdi by his publisher Giulio Ricordi and by Boito, it received its premiere at La Scala, Milan, on February 5, 1887, with Francesco Tamagno in the title role and Victor Maurel as Iago, under the baton of Franco Faccio, to tumultuous acclaim. Boito's masterly compression of Shakespeare and Verdi's continuous, through-composed score â" from the lightning-struck choral storm that opens the work to Otello's shattering final âNiun mi temaâ â" reveal the composer's full and triumphant embrace of music drama.
