Binding is tight and square. DJ is in mylar. . . . . . . This is a very good book that tells the story of Albert Schweitzer's life. Although it would probably not withstand modern criticism as it contains a lot of material that derived from the author's imagination, and therefore it has some what of a 'just so' quality, I read it 61 years ago at the age of 15, and Schweitzer's story, as told in this book, inspired me to become a physician and to follow, in the early years of my career, some of Schweitzer's example. It is written for young readers, but I enjoyed reading it again after a life of experience and having worked in a hospital in the Peruvian Amazon that was modeled after Schweitzer's hospital in Lambarene (and which was founded by a physician who was also from Alsace-Lorraine and who was a protà gà of Schweitzer). That experience led me to a broader public health perspective and away from the essentially 19th century approach to patients in a remote setting, but the story of Schweitzer's struggles in Africa was something I came to understand in a very personal way in my own experience. My life probably would have been quite different if I had not read this book in 1953. -- Warren M. Hern.
