Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: No jacket, as issued. 1st Edition. Octavo. Pp.xxxiv, 341 + map. Scholarly treatise, with a large folding map, bibliography, appendix on the Ural-Altaic Peoples in the 17th century, and list of Chinese terms. Father Pereira's famous diary is given in the original Portug…uese and in English translation. He was a Jesuit missionary who found favor with the Kangxi Emperor because of his skills in music and clockmaking, and his knowledge of Latin and international law. He was interpreter in negotiating the treaty between Russia and China in 1689, and a new law providing more religious freedom in China. The treaty is also printed in Latin and English. Very good in plain printed wrappers, slightly toned at the edges, and with a small red sticker to the front. Internally pristine, with the pages still unopened and unread. Bibliotheca Instituti Historici S. I. Volumen XVIII.
