Includes List of Other Books by Julian Barnes; Author Dedication; Author's Note; Acknowledgments; Illustration Credits and A Note About the Author. Illustrated with ninety-seven black-and-white and color photographs plus black-and-white photographic front and rear endpapers. "From the Man Booker Prize-winning author of The Sense of an Ending, a rich, witty, revelatory tour of Belle Epoque Paris, vian the remarkable life story of the pioneering surgeon Samuel Pozzi. In the summer of 1885, three Frenchment arrived in London for a few days' intellectual shopping: a prince, a count, and a commoner with an Italian name. In time, each of these men would achieve a certain level of renown, but who weree they then and what was the significance of their sojourn in England? Answering these questions, Julian Barnes unfurls the stories of their lives, which play out against the backdrop of the Belle Epoque in Paris. Our guide through this world is Samuel Pozzi, society doctor, freethinker, and man of science with a famously complicated private life who was the subject of one of John Singer Sargent's greatest portraits. In this vivid tapestry of people (Henry James, Sarah Bernhardt, Oscar Wilde, Marcel Proust, and James Whistler, among many others), place, and time, we see not merely an epoch of glamour and pleasure but, surprisingly, one of violence, prejudice, and nativism - with more parallels to our own age than we might imagine. The Man in the Red Coat is, at once, a fresh portrait of the Belle Epoque, an illuminating look at the log-standing exchange of ideas between Britain and France, and a life of a man who lived passionately in the moment but whose ideas and achievements were far ahead of his time." - from the inner front jacket flap.

Prima edizione
Hardcover. Condizione: Good. 1st Edition. Printed in England. Date on the title page. First Printing. Preface, Twelve Essays (Footnotes and brief Bibliography for each); 350 pages, followed by a description of 'Unity History Schools' [two pages] and a listing of the series publications on the rear pastedown. The original moss-green cloth is rubbed at the extremities, with a scratch on the lower board; gilt lettering is clear on the bumped spine. Ex-Library from the University of Hawaii, with blind-stamp on the title page, and an ink number with discreet 'Withdrawn' at the preface. There is light toning to the free endpapers and a signature of author R. [Robert] H. Murray who left pale pencil markings---mostly in Whitehead's essay, "The First Physical Synthesis." The remaining 330 pages are completely clean. [Please see my five images of the actual book.] From the description at rear: "A sketch in broad outline is given of the history of science, especially in its relation to the contemporary social evolution. First the historical retrospect, then the living problem, and the whole looked at from the completely human, not merely nationalist standpoint." As with every book from my father's collection, tipped-in at the front is the small, attractive, acid-free bookplate pictured on my homepage. All books are wrapped with special care and are shipped promptly with tracking; international sales sent via global priority, also with tracking.
