La aventura de Periolibros tiene su antecedente en un proyecto concebido por el escritor peruano Manuel Scorza en la ciudad de Lima a principios en los años setenta. El proyecto arrancó a principios de 1991 cuando Federico Mayor Zaragoza, director de la UNESCO, propuso a Miguel de la Madrid, director del FCE que una veintena de diarios de lengua española y portuguesa publicaran una biblioteca de literatura iberoamericana capaz de alcanzar a las grandes poblaciones del orbe. Se publicarían obras de Rubén Darío, Juan Ramón Jiménez, César Vallejo, Fernando Pessoa, Octavio Paz, Jorge Icaza, Alfonso Reyes, Gabriel García Márquez, Álvaro Mutis, Alejo Carpentier, Julio Cortázar, Ernesto Sábato, Miguel Otero Silva, Camilo José Cela, Carlos Fuentes y Alfredo Pareja Diezcanseco, para sólo mencionar en desorden calculado algunos nombres. Periolibros fue concebido desde un principio como un proyecto experimental o un experimento editorial capaz de aliar la prensa y el libro en un solo destino, en un solo instrumento lector al servicio de la cultura iberoamericana, es decir, escrita en español y en portugués por autores representativos de toda la región. La realización del formato y del diseño estuvo a cargo de los pintores y diseñadores Vicente Rojo y Rafael López Castro, quienes resultaron decisivos en la articulación del proyecto en la medida en que lograron transmutar la página del periódico en la página de un libro de arte. 22 páginas por ejemplar. 32 x 23.
