XI, 53pp + full-page b/w map. Near fine with some light creasing. This was prompted by recent discoveries in the region, which "forces us to reconsider the material culture of the Near East and to evaluate in a much wider perspective the phenomena of agricultural evolution, trade and acculturation". Vanden Berghe's Preface presents a brief history and description of the early Gulf states, and overview of archaeological investigations to date, beginning in the late 19th century, with Danish missions from 1952 led by Glob and Bibby "the real start of scientific research in the Gulf". Credit is given to local services and foreign missions. The bibliography includes general works, and works organised by period then by region. For practical reasons, it excludes studies in Arabic, Russian and Japanese. Supplements were issued in 1996 and 2008.
