This insider's account of the workings of Umkhonto We Sizwe, the armed wing of the ANC, during the underground years, is a modern-day story of intrigue and cunning in the fight against apartheid. The white author begins by describing his involvement with the South African Communist Party and the underground resistance within South Africa in the 1950s and early 1960s. Following the arrests of Mandela and other ANC leaders he fled into hiding overseas, became one of the key commanders of Umkhonto We Sizwe and was responsible for setting up training camps in Tanzania, Cuba and elsewhere. Kasrils became notorious as the "Red Pimpernel" as he slipped in and out of South Africa in a plethora of disguises to run secret missions, narrowly escaping arrest and detention in several close shaves with security forces. After the legalizing of the ANC and SACP, he returned to Johannesburg to take up a position on the National Executive Committee. The story culminates with the disastrous march on Bisho in the Ciskei homelands in September 1992, when police opened fire on the crowd that Kasrils was leading and a massacre ensued. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Winner of South Africa's top literary prize, the Alan Paton Award, The Unlikely Secret Agent tells the thrilling true story of one woman's struggle against the apartheid system. It is 1963. South Africa is in crisis and the white state is under siege. One August 19th, the dreaded Security Police descended on Griggs bookstore in downtown Durban and arrest Eleanor, the white daughter of the manager. They threaten to "break her or hang her" if she does not lead them to her lover, "Red" Ronnie Kasrils, who is wanted on suspicion of involvement in recent acts of sabotage, including the toppling of electricity pylons and explosions at a Security Police office in Durban. But Eleanor has her own secret to conceal: she is, like Ronnie, a clandestine agent for the underground ANC and must protect her handlers and Ronnie at all costs. Astutely, she convinces the police that she is on the verge of a nervous breakdown and, still a prisoner, is relocated to a mental hospital in Pietermaritzburg for assessment. It is here that she plots her escape. This remarkable story of a young woman's courage and daring at a time of increasing repression in apartheid South Africa is told here for the first time with great verve and elan by Eleanor's husband, Ronnie Kasrils, who eventually became South Africa's Minister of Intelligence Services in 2004. Ronnie Kasrils's memoir reflects on compelling questions as to what turned a white youngster from a modest background into a life-long revolutionary of note. A tiny minority who abandoned a life of privilege were the antithesis of conventionality and toeing the line. What made those such as Kasrils break all the rules and confront white power with such courage, unbridled spirit and yearning for the truth? This is a challenging and fascinating conundrum but Kasrils will claim he is no aberration of history. The answers to that question, which unravel through twenty years, will beguile readers as he peers back with endearing frankness into the origins and experiences of his formative years.A Yeoville-born boykie with Yiddish roots; heartfelt empathy for the underdog; an instinctive rejection of authoritarianism in school and wider society were influences informing his adult life as revolutionary activist. With a remarkable memory and flair for the written and spoken word the narrative revels in the social, sexual and political awakening of a roguish boy's adventures with girls, rock music, bohemian culture and leaping across the colour barrier.Kasrils's tadpoles of the memoir's title represent the submerged often illusive tracts of memory he searches for as he delves into the mystery of his metamorphosis. This stylistic element adds to the creativity of this fourth memoir.

Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: New. This is the first book about a significant South African figure, Joe Modise, who worked in the shadows for much of his life. His journey took him from an impoverished childhood to being chief of a guerrilla army and then Minister of Defence in a liberated country. Kasrils and Hove tell the story of Modise, the gifted revolutionary and military man. They correct mischievous misinformation from his detractors. Modise, a bus driver from Sophiatown in the volatile 1950s, was a young firebrand and brilliant organiser - frequently by Mandela, Sisulu and Oliver Tambo's side. He was among the youngest accused in the 1956-61 Treason Trial. He was a founding member of Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK) in 1961, having pressed for the turn to armed confrontation since there was no possibility for non-violent change. After Mandela and Sisulu's imprisonment, he became MK's commander. He served until 1994 as one of the longest-serving guerrilla leaders in history. He was appointed Minister of Defence after the ANC's electoral victory in 1994. He presided over the modernisation of the new military, the SANDF, successfully seeing to the effective integration of former adversaries, its transformation and the contentious replacement of obsolete weapons systems, sometimes known as the 'Arms Deal'. To have kept an irregular armed force in exile intact, with operations that grew from sabotage and armed propaganda to approaching People's War and mass insurrection in the latter stages, required impressive leadership qualities and firm discipline. To this day, there are those fiercely loyal to him and his detractors. This book celebrates his life, achievements and legacy, and answers his critics through fifty voices who knew him at different periods, including tender views of a close-knit family. It makes for absorbing reading in a fluid and readable style. It is firmly lodged within the context of those turbulent and dangerous times.
