Trade Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. Francine Kass (Cover Design) (illustratore). Oxford University Press Ppbk 1997. 293 pp. Solidly bound copy with moderate external wear, crisp pages and clean text. Publisher's Remainder copy. Synopsis: The typical American family has changed dramatically since the days of "Ozzie and Harriet" and "Father Knows Best." Double-income families are now the rule, and fathers are much more involved in raising the children and cleaning house. Reactions to these changes have been diverse, ranging from grave misgivings to a sense of liberation and new possibility. Groups as diverse as Promise Keepers, the Million Man March, and Robert Bly's mythopoetic men's movement tell us that fathers are important. From the fundamentalist right to the feminist left, opinions about the changing nature of the family--and the consequent rethinking of gender roles--have been vehement, if not always very well-founded. In Family Man, sociologist Scott Coltrane brings a wealth of compelling evidence to this debate over the American family. Drawing on his own extensive research and many fascinating interviews, Coltrane explodes many of the common myths about shared parenting, provides first-hand accounts of men's and women's feelings in two-job families, and reveals some innovative solutions that couples have developed to balance job and family commitments. Readers will find an insightful discussion of precisely how and why family life has changed, what forms it may take in the future, and what new kinds of fathers may be on the horizon. The author firmly places these questions within a broad contextual framework. He provides, for instance, an illuminating history of the family that shows that, far from being a fixed structure, the family has always adapted to changing economic, social, and ideological pressures. And by examining how families operate in a variety of non-industrial societies, he demonstrates that our own notions of gender-specific work and parenting roles are culturally rather than biologically determined, and thus inherently flexible. And indeed these roles are changing. While contemporary American women still perform the bulk of domestic tasks, Family Man gives us decisive evidence that men are becoming increasingly involved in both housework and childrearing. Coltrane argues convincingly that this trend will continue. Given the current economic situation--with two-job households now the norm--and the gradual ideological shift away from restrictive gender roles, more and more couples will find it both necessary and desirable to share the workload. More important, Coltrane suggests that as fathers participate more fully in raising their children and performing traditionally female household tasks, men will themselves be transformed by the experience in profoundly positive ways and American society as a whole will move closer to true gender equity. Family Man succeeds brilliantly in bringing clarity, perspective, and above all hope to a discussion that is too often shrill, chaotic, and beset with the rhetoric of nostalgia. It shows us not only exactly where the family is today, but where it has been and what it may become.

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. The First Scar: A Book of Verse is a compilation of traditional, Romantic Era-style poetry written over some years of particular emotional tumult for the author. Each of the 30 unique works presented herein offer the perspectives of a young man with long-undiagnosed Autism Spectrum Disorder, struggling desperately for clarity in a rapidly-clouding and inhospitable world. The lines composed ask questions of the natural world regarding its organization and unconscious composition, the spiritual world regarding its many facets of understanding humankind and morality, and the world of personal strife within the author as he attempts interaction with these. The subjects addressed in this book are projected with a voice from centuries ago, when poetry was considered music whose melodies were the words themselves. Considering the environment of the modern world, which attempts to modify needlessly the core virtues and values of the past that granted humankind its immeasurable wisdom of thought and action, the author found his poetic voice in the time of industrial infancy; when the technologically-developed territories of the late 1700's to early 1800's discovered convenience through the insatiable invention and deployment of machinery and conveyor belts, several uniquely-minded artists appeared to combat that dangerous mindset of the rejection of humanity for material gain -- in poetry, there were those like Wordsworth, Keats, Shelley, Byron, and Blake. They beheld the inherent harm of industrialization and how it used human beings as tools until casual disposal, and they wrote lamentations for their haphazard birth at a time when their souls pined for simpler, more-reasonable days long-past. They also were quite unafraid to address religious views that withstood centuries of thoughtless approval and practice, demanding of them to prove their sense and worth in a world when spirituality was sold for quick comforts.Upon finding and interpreting these old works, the author of this book realized that their endeavors matched his to frightening congruence. Many of their issues with modern living mirrored his own, and those of countless others today. He became convinced that his voice was shared by the same Muse which gave those poets the inner fire which they applied in ink to parchment. Being that such equal hardships as theirs yet remain in his lifetime, the author sought (and still seeks) to explore them in the same fashion as they did two-hundred years ago. It has become a personal mission of paramount importance in his life, and the purpose for his aptitude at writing poetry at all.A second reason for his fervent creation of poetry is to re-establish what poetry was before Ezra Pound's declaration that it could be absolutely any writing shaped vaguely like a poem. The author thoroughly believes that the genre of poetry has been established for thousands of years, and what is considered 'contemporary poetry' is in fact a third genre whose name was never given. Instead, it was slotted (selfishly) under the category of Poetry rather than instituting its own. To the author of this book, Poetry has form, meter, and less-strictly, rhyme; otherwise, it is a product of that third genre between Poetry and Prose. This distinction has been made more and more vague since Pound's time, and by now, the word Poetry barely means anything. Consider this book as the first "scar" upon a modern brand of "verse" which has long-usurped the ancient art of true poetry. Journey through themes of isolation, nature's solace, and the quiet search for meaning in a disconnected age through the power of rhythm and rhyme. This item is printed on demand. The properties of human belief and those of physical fact often clash, and this confusion may send one into deep confusion, anxiety, and hopelessness. The realm of fantasy is often touched upon, and stories are told in such atmospheres as can harbor the philosophies that reality cannot contain. Written over a 4-year period of particular tumult for the author, these works record his attempt at understanding the human condition and the chaotic, rapidly-changing world around him.
