Arranged in four fascinating sectionsWinning Friends, Losing Friends, Waging War, and Making Peacethe vignettes that comprise the text include tales of anthropomorphized birds and animals who are imbued with all too human qualities and frailties. Using humour, satire, and unconventional methods of narration, the stories in the collection prescribe canny and pragmatic responses to a range of very human situations, ambitions, problems, and dilemmas. Not only does the book have advice for the ruler who is too timid or too haughty, but also for the minister who must serve him, as for the innocent husband with the conniving wife, the beautiful wife with the undeserving husband, friends turned enemies, enemies reconciled, clever people, foolish people, the greedy, the distraught, and so on. The Hitopadesha, like the Panchatantra, is among the most widely translated classical texts of India. This new version by historian and Sanskritist Shonaleeka Kaul is an idiomatic translation in simple narrative prose and free verse that retains the freshness and wit of the original.

Urban characters and their world-II: Ascetic, Brahmana, King and the social order. 5. The urban experience. 6. Symbolic values and the city. Bibliography. Index. When you think of India s ancient cities, you think of khaki archaeologists digging crumbling structures out of ancient mud. Urban spheres, from this perspective, often look as dull as the dust from which they emerge. But the early Indian city wasn t like that at all, says Shonaleeka Kaul; it was certainly not only brick-and-mortar, nor merely an agglomeration of built-up space. In Sanskrit literature these cities were alive, vibrant, teeming with variety. Kaul examines Sanskrit kavyas over about a thousand years to see what India s early historic cities were like as living, lived-in, entities. She looks at ideologies, attitudes, institutions, and practices in ancient urban areas, showing the ways in which they often cohered into a worldview, a mentalite. This is also a book about Sanskrit literature. Scholars have long argued for a nuanced use of literary texts to achieve a more rounded understanding of ancient history, and Kaul achieves exactly that. She takes forward the idea of a Sanskrit literary culture , arguing that genres influence methods of historical representation. Her book gives us a fresh view of the early city, showing distinctive urban ways of thought and behaviour which relate in complex ways to tradition, morality, and authority. In advocating Sanskrit kavyas as an important historical source, it addresses not just ancient India specialists but also scholars of literary history: the kavyas rework history, says Kaul, providing us with transhistoricity rather than ahistoricity . By asking new questions about early Indian cities and ancient Indian texts, this book asks to be read by every scholar of history, urbanism, cityscapes, literary history, Sanskrit writings, and South Asian antiquity. Bharata Before the British and Other Essays explores a number of fundamental questions regarding the history of early India: Did the British bring India into existence or is she an ancient nation? Was Kashmir 'unique' and isolated or thoroughly connected with the rest of India? Is myth the antithesis of history or the self-expression of historical communities? Was there an Indic vision of history and time as different from modern Western notions? Was Sanskrit an elitist language or one with public reach and relevance? Did it also speak for the weak and powerless, including animals? Could Indic architecture be an instrument of liberation (moksha)? What was the ancient idea of erotics (kama) and how did it relate to society? How did it feelsmell, sound, touch, appearto live in our earliest cities? What is the state of Indian history today and where do we go from here? Cultural History of Early South Asia: A Reader presents a wide-ranging survey of the diverse art forms of early South Asia. In doing so, it departs from the dominant tendency of treating the arts as static heritage of the past with just exhibition value, and instead perceives them as dynamic processes of meaning and communication in the past. It connects cultural production with ordinary life, to explore the various roles which literature and visual arts played in the lives of their communities. Here, art is investigated as objects of aesthetic enjoyment, but also as creations of rhetorical or philosophical moment, as well as of utilitarian value. Through its broad chronological sweep covering the earliest specimens of cultural expression like the prehistoric rock paintings of Bhimbetka; the ornaments of the Harappan culture; the frescoes and rock-cut temples of Ajanta and Ellora; the Pali Jatakas, and South Asian folklore, the book argues for a variety of audiences in ancient and early medieval South Asia. Bringing together authoritative voices on South Asian history, archaeology and literature, the book presents complementary views which will help in understanding the popular dimensions of the subcontinent s art and culture. It will acquaint its readership with fundamental contributions to the region s art history, and yet do so in a way that questions and opens up received wisdom, and initiates a new understanding of early cultural processes. Scholarly, yet accessible, it will be of enduring relevance for researchers, students of history and cultural studies, as well as lay readers interested in the artistic traditions of South Asia.
