Condizione: Good. 1884. Paperback. 283pp. A rare edition. Some scuffing and slight tearing to front cover. Background: The Catholic Church had been opposed to the ideals of the French revolution, the United Irishmen and the Irish Republican Brotherhood. However it backed the 1798 commemorations, seeing the rebellion in an idealised way as a fight for faith and fatherland. This interpretation of the rebellion was chiefly promoted by the Franciscan, Father Patrick F. Kavanagh through publications such as his Popular History of the Insurrection of 1798 published in 1874. This and other works by Kavanagh were very popular and ran into several editions. However he was presenting a biased version of events exaggerating the role of the Catholic Church in the rebellion. He wanted to disassociate the involvement of the United Irishmen in the Rebellion and emphasised that Father Murphy was against the United Irishmen. Keywords: Revolutionary Ireland. Not a first edition copy. . . . Books ship from the US and Ireland.
