Description : Depuis ses origines, et jusqu'aux traces laissées par son imagerie dans la mémoire, le maquis représente toujours plus qu'un simple phénomène militaire. Le maquis est analysé par l'auteur aussi bien comme un choix que comme une nécessité face aux pressions et aux exigences c…roissantes des Allemands. Son développement a engendré des polarités au sein de la société française, mais son histoire n'est pas proposée comme un simple exemple de ce qu'on appelle actuellement " les guerres franco-françaises ". Pareille image de guerre civile refléterait peut-être le conflit ouvert entre les maquis et la milice, mais il simplifierait excessivement la dynamique complexe entre Vichy et les maquis. Une part considérable de ce livre est consacrée à leur relation, et il y a pluralité au sein du régime de Vichy tout autant que dans l'expérience des maquis. Leurs deux histoires sont entrelacées. Les autorités centrales et locales de Vichy donnèrent forme et substance aux maquis. Inversement, ce furent les maquis qui déterminèrent pour beaucoup l'histoire de la fin de Vichy. Faisant une large place au témoignage oral, le point de vue original choisi par H.R.
