Stagecoach and Tavern Tales of the Old Northwest Harry Ellsworth Cole edited by Louise Phelps Kellogg Introduction by Patrick J. Brunet Southern Illinois University Press 1997 First SIU Press edition, originally published by the Arthur H. Clark Co. in 1930. ISBN 0809321254 Harry E. Cole wrote about life in the taverns along the stagecoach lines in Wisconsin and northern Illinois from the early 1800's until the 1880's. Dividing his work into two parts- roads and taverns- Cole begins with the importance of the early trails, especially the Old Military Road crossing Wisconsin from Fort Howard at Green Bay to Fort Crawford at Prairie du Chien and the road from Fort Dearborn at Chicago north through what would later become Milwaukee as it follows on to Green Bay. These main trails spawned hundreds of paths and many taverns. Cole's focus, though, is on the taverns. He shows how they were built, provides a history of the famous ones, and describes how they became multi-purpose community centers. Unusual tavern names such as the "Skunk's Misery" and the "Norwegian Hell" have their own chapter as do colorful signs and advertisements. Later chapters deal with the conviviality, practical jokes, and the tragedies that can occur when strong liquor and high spirits mix. AS NEW, clean, bright, and unmarked, spine is not creased, corners sharp and square, appears unread. Slight sun fading to spine is the only defect.
