Versailles was the residence of three French kings, Louis XIV, Louis XV, and Louis XVI, their courts, and the French government from 1682 to 1789. The Trianons referred to two palaces on the grounds of the great estate at Versailles: the larger was built by Louis XIV in 1687; the smaller, built by Louis XV 1762¿68, was used first by his mistress Madame du Barry (1743¿1793) and afterwards by Marie Antoinette. Versailles was the palace and favorite residence of the Sun King, Louis XIV.
