Developed out of the introductory environmental design curriculum at the Yale School of Architecture, the text challenges twentieth-century modernist abstraction and mechanical functionalism. Authors Kent C. Bloomer and Charles W. Moore propose a somatic framework, arguing that meaningful architecture emerges through haptic memory, bodily orientation, and sensory projection rather than detached two-dimensional geometry. Designed by Tina Beebe and set in Garamond type, the volume was published by Yale University Press in New Haven and London in 1977, issued simultaneously in two bindings and printed by Haddon Craftsmen. Analytical line diagrams, structural sections, and photographs contrast historic landmarks, including the Parthenon, Bernini's forecourt at St. Peter's, and Bavarian pilgrimage churches, with modern spatial environments. Robert J. Yudell contributed to the theoretical text. A half-title signature attributed to David Kahler, FAIA (1937-2026), accompanies a pencil acquisition date of January 6, 1978, inside the front cover, placing the volume in his working library shortly after publication. Kahler served for decades as president of Kahler Slater, co-designed the Milwaukee Art Museum's Quadracci Pavilion expansion alongside Santiago Calatrava, and directed the restoration of the Wisconsin State Capitol.
