Humanitarian Futures: Challenges and Opportunities explores the increasing types, dimensions and dynamics of crises threatening the world in the twenty-first century, and argues that those with humanitarian roles and responsibilities can only meet such challenges if their approaches to strategic and operational planning undergo fundamental paradigmatic shifts. Strategically and operationally, such shifts must begin by planning from the future, for the future.Author Randolph C. Kent, the UN's first Humanitarian Coordinator, with experience in some of the most complex crises of modern times, including Rwanda, Ethiopia, Kosovo, Sudan and Somalia, provides a blueprint for dealing with ever greater complexity on planet Earth and beyond. That blueprint is not about upgrading existing tools or relying upon tried precedence. Rather, it points to a new paradigm for meeting crises. It begins by looking at the changing nature of humanness and governance, and then turns to plausible future crises based on such changes, before concluding with practical steps for dealing with ever more complex humanitarian threats, now and in the future. This book will be an essential read for humanitarian policymakers and practitioners as well as for humanitarian and global studies researchers and students who are and want to be engaged in understanding and preparing for ever more complex and unpredictable humanitarian challenges.

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. viii, 264, [5] leaves of plates : ill. ; 21 cm. ; OCLC 15175658 ; LCCN 03032798 ; LC PZ3.M9677 Wh ; Frontispiece and plates facing p. 34, 94, 190 and 240, some signed by Walker Eng. Co ; black cloth with gold lettering and designs ; no dustjacket ; originally published, John P. Morton & Company, Louisville, Kentucky, 1903, ; written by Cornelia Randolph, the daughter of John Hampden Randolph (1813-1883) ; who was an American planter and businessman. Born into a wealthy Virginia family, when his father was appointed to be a federal judge in the lower Mississippi River valley in 1823, Randolph moved with his parents to the then-remote Natchez District of the Mississippi Territory. Randolph may have worked as a slave trader to supplement his income as a cotton plantation owner. In the 1840s he moved across the Mississippi River to Louisiana where he entered the sugar business, eventually assembling an expensive sugar works and owning a large area of land in Iberville Parish. His four contiguous plantations were called Nottoway, Blythewood, Forest Home, and Bayou Goula. Most of the land was devoted to sugarcane cultivated by an enslaved labor force but the fields were interspersed with timberland and cypress swamp. Randolph became quite wealthy by the 1850s and commissioned a large, storybook mansion house at Nottoway. ; Letters, stories, and diary entries from her life in Louisiana before the Civil War ; Origin of the pseudonym: "Ailenroc" is her first name spelled backward, and "M. R." are the initials of her married and maiden names, Murrell and Randolph, respectively ; she married Dr. David Gamble Murrell, nicknamed The Young Corporal, who was also a sculptor of note ; Cornelia Randolph Murrell is buried in Metairie Cemetery, New Orleans, Louisiana ; "Although the story opens with a description of the brilliant court of the Second Empire, the principal incidents occur in the White Castle, Louisiana, notably the romantic love affair which runs through two generations. The Empress Eugenie, Napoleon, the Audubons and other celebrated characters are introduced with scenes of slave life which happened before the Civil War. Most of the events, however, occur in war times." -- Publisher's Weekly, Jan 23, 1904; FINE. Book.
