Soft cover. Condizione: Good. Condition is Good in a soft cover. Illustrated. Book has moderate overall wear but still tight, pages clean with light age toning. From 1890 to 1962, Harvey, Illinois, grew from a temperance community founded in 1890 into an established industrial suburb, which saw significant population growth and demographic shifts by 1962. The period began with the town's incorporation in 1891, initially promoted as a model temperance town and later benefiting from the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition. The city's industrial base expanded, supported by its location on the Illinois Central Railroad, and it experienced steady population growth throughout the first half of the 20th century. By the end of this period, in 1962, it was a diverse and growing suburb of Chicago. 1890-1900: Founding and early growth Harvey was founded in 1890 by Turlington W. Harvey, who was associated with Dwight Moody. It was established as a model "Temperance Town," promoting Christian values. The establishment of the Harvey Land Association led to significant development in 1891, including residential and industrial growth. The city benefited from its proximity to Chicago and the 1893 World's Fair, attracting visitors and new residents. The population was 5,395 in 1900, with a predominantly white population (98.5%) and a foreign-born population of 18.2%. 1900-1930: Industrial expansion The city's industrial base grew, supported by its location on the Illinois Central Railroad. The population grew to 25,583 in 1930, while the foreign-born population slightly decreased to 16.4%. 1930-1962: Continued growth and demographic shifts The population continued to increase, reaching approximately 30,000 by the end of the century. Demographic shifts began to occur, with the foreign-born population decreasing to 5.3% by 1960. By 1962, Harvey was a well-established, multi-ethnic suburb of Chicago, though its demographic composition was still largely white. The period's history was compiled and published in a book in 1962 by the First National Bank in Harvey as a public service.
