Orchids are the important natural resources of Nepal and are the precious jewels of the nature. Due to wide climatic variations in Nepal orch…id flora are very much diversified and well flowering plants with about 25,000 species in the world, comprise various attractive flowers, not only important for their beauty but also for their use in medicine and trade. The orchid species are included in the Appendix 2 and some in the Appendix I of CITES. Most of the wild orchids of Nepal are under threat, and some are at the verge of extinction. Multiple factors are responsible for the threats to the orchids in Nepal. The taxonomic researches on Nepalese orchids are continuously carried out and recently many new reports of orchid species in Nepal have been published. There is still need for their detailed systematic investigation and need to conserve them before they become extinct from Nepal. A lot of work has still to be done at the National Herbarium to make the complete collections of the species found in Nepal. There is a need to publish a list of all the orchids found wild in Nepal for their proper utilization and management. Flora of Nepal on the basis of the herbarium specimens housed in the National Herbarium of Nepal and other international herbaria and the various publications. The book contains list of all orchid species of Nepal with their habit and distribution. Black and white and colour photographs are included in each species. The book will be useful to know the status of the orchid species found in Nepal and also to identify orchid species with the help of photographs.

The present book 'A handbook of the flowering plants of Nepal' is a list of the flowering plants of Nepal. Considering the discussion held in the T" international editorial meeting of… the flora of Nepal in Kathmandu in January 2017 the Department of Plant Resources planned to compile all the flowering plants reported from Nepal in three volumes as Handbooks. The plant list is based on the herbarium specimens of the flowering plants collected in Nepal although it felt very much difficult to the authors to compile all these specimens as these specimens are preserved in various institutions in Nepal, India, Japan, Europe and America and most of them could not be checked out by the authors. The present book is the first volume of the three books listing all the flowering plants occurring in Nepal. In this study, an updated checklist of the flowering plants of Nepal is presented based on the herbarium specimens collected from Nepal and given in available literature and online resources relevant to new taxa, national or regional new records, and new taxonomic papers. In the book 58 families of flowering plants reported from Nepal are presented.

The early taxonomical studies of Nepalese plants were carried out by the Europeans mainly by the British botanists. As a result of which the first book on flora of Nepal 'Prodromus Florae Nepalensis' was prepared in 1852 by David Don. Although a few but notably important due to pioneer work of its kind on Nepalese flowering plants, taxonomical works on Nepalese plants were published from 1802 to 1947. Since 1949 many British, Japanese and Indian expeditions carried out plant explorations in Nepal and published many important findings. Many important works on Nepalese flowering plants were published between 1949 and 1982, especially three volumes of 'An Enumeration of flowering plants of Nepal' in 1978-1982 by Hara et al. Even after this publication many plant collecting expeditions in Nepal were carried out especially by the Japanese botanists. Researches carried out in the Central Department of Botany (Tribhuvan University, Nepal), University of Tokyo (Japan) and University of Edinburgh (U.K.) for M. Sc and Ph. D degrees are noteworthy. Studies on the flowering plants are still continuing and newly discovered species and new records for flora of Nepal are being added.

From the foreword: This is a revision and update of Catalogue of Nepalese Vascular Plants published in 1976 by the then Department of Medicinal Plants (now Department of Plants Resources). The present volume includes the list of plants preserved in Nepal s National Herbarium (coded as KATH), an undertaking of the Department of Plant Resources. The major work of the National Herbarium and Plant Laboratories is to collect, identify, preserve and publish information on Nepal s plant wealth such as Flora of Nepal. The Catalogue of Nepalese Flowering Plants is prepared on the basis of the plant materials collected so far from the country by various plant collectors national and foreign botanists since the Department started botanizing various parts of the country in 1960, and also joint scientic expeditions arranged with foreign institutions on various occasions. This has not only enriched the specimens in the herbarium, but it also presents a glimpse of the present condition of vegetation and floristic composition of the country. Further collections of plant specimens will be continued so as to make this catalogue complete and more comprehensive in the future. This is the first supplement to the Catalogue of Nepalese Flowering Plants which was published in three parts by the Department of Plant Resources in 2010, 2011 and 2012. The Catalogues were prepared on the basis of the plant materials collected from Nepal by various plant collectors national and foreign botanists and preserved in the National Herbarium of Nepal. Like the previous publications this book is also the results of work that the National Herbarium and Plant Laboratories of that Department are undertaking to fulfill one of its objectives, the preparation and publication of a Flora of Nepal. After the publications of the Catalogues in 2012 many new specimens have been added to the National Herbarium of Nepal and also many species have been named for the old unidentified specimens.
