Kräuter und Heilpflanzen sind als Alternative zur Schulmedizin seit einiger Zeit wieder "in aller Munde"…. Im Mittelalter war die Kräuterheilkunde zentraler Punkt der medizinischen Versorgung - dies wird an der durchgehenden lateinischen Tradierung antiken Kräuterwissens bis in die Neuzeit deutlich ersichtlich. Die germanistische Mediävistik hat sich dieses Themas bis jetzt meist nur im Zusammenhang mit der Sachprosaforschung und der Erforschung der medizinischen Aspekte der hà fischen Romane angenommen. Der Autor veranschaulicht in einer gattungsübergreifenden Analyse, dass Kräuterwissen und Kräuterheilkunde nicht nur in medizinisch relevanten Texten und Textstellen sondern in der gesamten deutschsprachigen Dichtung des Hochmittelalters transportiert worden ist. Die Basis für diese Untersuchung bilden über 1000 Textstellen, die in die drei GroÃgruppen "Minnelyrik", "religià se Dichtung" und "weltliche hà fische Dichtung" gegliedert wurden. Diese belegen das Vorkommen von rund 40 namentlich genannten Pflanzen. Um dem Leser die Visualisierung der dargestellten Pflanzen zu erleichtern, liegt dem Buch eine CD-Rom bei, die eine Gegenüberstellung von historischem Pflanzenbild und moderner Abbildung bietet. Allein hier zeigt sich die "akribische Sammlertätigkeit", mit der das Material für diese Untersuchung zusammengetragen wurde. Mittelalterliche Dichter wussten ihrem Publikum bekanntlich in vielen Rollen zu gefallen: u. a. als Seher, Botschafter, politischer Berater, moralischer Mahner, spirituell-liturgischer Lebenshelfer oder auch einfach als Geschichten-Erzähler und Unterhalter. Diesem vielschichtigen Rollenbild kann ein weiterer wichtiger Mosaikstein hinzugefügt werden: Viele der bekanntesten Dichterpersà nlichkeiten des deutschsprachigen Hochmittelalters nahmen in ihren Werken die Rolle eines Kräuterkundigen wahr und führten unter dem Schleier der poetischen Sprache vor, wie aus dem Alltag vertraute Pflanzen ihre geheimnisvolle Wirkung entfalten. Für jede der genannten literarischen Gruppen konnten die bereits bekannten Fakten untermauert oder ergänzt werden. Die in diesem Umfang einzigartige Analyse der literarischen "Kräuter-Anwendung" bringt aber vor allem eine Reihe bis dato unberücksichtigter Aspekte zum Vorschein. Die Ergebnisse decken neue vielschichtige Sinnebenen auf, wo sie nicht bzw. nicht in diesem Ausmaà für wahrscheinlich gehalten worden wären: Kräuter in den Händen Walthers von der Vogelweide, Neidharts von Reuental, Johannes Hadloubs, Wolframs von Eschenbach, Gottfrieds von StraÃburg oder Konrads von Würzburg entfalten zwischen attributiver Oberflächenbedeutung und symbolträchtiger Tiefe eine Vielzahl an wahrlich faszinierenden Wirkungen.
