Prima edizione
Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. An idealized Middle Ages, a world filled with violent tests of courage, clamorous and raging batle, adventurous quest, and yearning love of knight and damsel unfolds for the reader of this rendition of the Arthurian legends by James Knowles, based on Malory's 14th century "Morte d'Arthur". Richly illustrated with Louis Rhead's intricately twining ornamental designs and beautiful line drawings, this volume invites the reader to enter the medieval world of knightly legend and chivalric lore. Down through the centuries, both children and adults have been fascinated by these tales of enchantment and mystery which demonstrate the constructive power of courtesy in contrast to the chaotic effects of blind hostility, and prove that physical strength must be coupled with moral qualities in order to triumph over the evil actions of the lawless and self-seeking. In these tales, evil is omnipresent among treacherous and grasping warlords. Arthur and his knights of the Round Table combat it incessantly, their efforts meeting with success or failure depending on their purity of purpose and the honor and virtuousness of their intentions. The chronicle opens with the wizard Merlin helping King Uther Pendragon to win the beautiful Igerna, locked in a tower in the Cornish town of Tintagiles. In exchange, the wizard demands their first-born child. The child, Arthur, is thus secretly raised and assumes power after Pendragon's death, first proving his royalty by removing a sword from a stone unyielding to all others. Arthur is also presented with the magical sword, Excalibur, a gift from Vivien, Lady of the Lake, a fair enchantress glimpsed floating on the moonlit water near Caerleon, or Camelot, as we know it today. With the aid of Excalibur, Arthur establishes peace in his realm, subduing Romans, rebellious lords, and in Brittany, destroying a cannibalistic grant. Arthur falls in love with and eventually marries, Guinevere, daughter of the Welsh King, Leodgrance, but she is also wooed and won by Lancelot, fabled Knight of the Round Table. In the first section of the tales, Caerleon is a fair utopia of green gardens, towering churches, and regal palaces, but dark elements soon appear. Each year at Pentecost, knights set forth from Caerleon in quest of adventure and fame. Thus, Sir Balin is led by a hundred ladies to a castle where he must fight the Red Knight, who is revealed to be his own brother. At another Pentecost, the treacherous and accomplished sorceress, Morgan Le Fay, lures Arthur and Sir Accolon aboard a sumptuous and abandoned ship, which, unanchored, sails forth on a series of perilous journeys. (Water and enchantment are intimately allied in teh Arthurian world. Lancelot of the Lake, for example, was raised in the underwater kingdom of Vivien.) In the second half of the Arthurian chronicle, the mood darkens further, as the strong beneficent forces of that world begin to crumble. The magical protection of Merlin is absent; in his dotage, Merlin is tricked by the sorceress, Nimue, when, by means of a charm, locks him in a tree. Without the benefit of his advice, things take a turn for the worse, the best knights disperse on the Grail Quest, many never to return; Arthur and Lancelot engage in warfare over Guinevere, forever dissolving the fellowship of the Round Table; and at the conclusion of the chronicle, Arthur kills his traitorous son, Modred, but is himself fatally wounded. He is carried away in a magic barge to the Vale of Avillion, perhaps to be healed by three enhancements, perhaps to disappear forever. This was a library book. Paper is torn on the inside back board. There are bumps to corner boards. Page 4 has a date from the library (see picture). Third page there is a number and initials from the library (see picture). There is an address stamp from the library on the page edges (see picture). The pages are clean and free of any markings or highlighting.
