First known appearance in a book by Thomas Clayton Wolfe (following the separate publication of his "Crisis in Industry") in the form of his play "The Return of Buck Gavin / The Tragedy of a Mountain Outlaw." (Wolfe played the lead in the 1919 first stage production -- the glossy photo at the play's start here depicts a bearded Wolfe as the title character.) Features four other plays, seven other glossy photos and two woodcuts by J.J. Lankes and another by Mary De B. Graves. 173 pp. Reduced from $30.

These recipes were collected by Mrs. Grierson during her husband's military career (1862-1888) and used to some extent at the many postings he had until her death in 1888. During a posting to Fort Davis Texas the family obtained some ranch land there and this is where the cookbook came to light in 1935. The book was a hodge podge of handwritten recipes, newspaper clippings, and recipes from friend and relatives pasted into a book format. Over 100 recipes in this book were selected and tested by National Park wives. Mrs. Grierson's recipe is listed first and the modern adaptation and method of preparation below. Her recipes reflect the ingenuity of a frontier wife for substitutes when certain ingredients were unavailable. Also included are some home remedies and housekeeping hints from the 1880s. A clean very presentable copy.

Just as Julia is about to marry Lacey, her plot is exposed by Bill Jeffreys, who intervenes and reunites the rightful pair, leading to forgiveness and restoration . The Lamplighter by Maria Susanna Cummins (originally 1854) is a sentimental coming-of-age tale centered on Gertrude Flint, a neglected orphan rescued by Trueman Flint, a kind lamplighter. Through his guidance and her own perseverance, she grows into a morally upright and compassionate adult, ultimately finding heartfelt love and stability in her later life . Together, these two novellas offer heartfelt moral dramasone about sisterly rivalry and redemption, the other about resilience and virtue in the face of hardship.

The original work contained approximately 600 recipies, only a portion of which are included in the present work. National Park Service wives and their friends tested over one hundred recipies and noted the preparation procedures. In this edition Mrs. Grierson's recipe is printed first, and underneath the modern adaptation and method of preparation is provided. Good. Sticker removed from title page leaving scuff.
