West Coast Mayor Tony Kokshoorn played a vital role in the concept and production of this large and impressive 150th anniversy commemorative book covering the Grey River area of the West coast and its capital Greymouth. Not only was he responsible for co-ordinating the publication, but is also acknowledged as the publisher, with the family trust a sponsor. The area covered by the mammoth book (unpacked weight 3.2 kg) is best known historically for its Gold Rush period beginning in the early 1860s and which was the region's main "industry" for many years. Another product that superceded gold in economic terms was coal and this remained so until recent times. Timber was another imortant commodity while shipping was the life-blood of the region for both incoming and outgoing goods, as the mountain ranges behind the Coast literally isolated it from the rest of NZ. A forest of masts in a 1911 photograph of ships at the Greymouth Wharf illustrates better than words the reliance of the area on merchant shipping. This was only reduced after rail and road crossings of the Southern Alps were completed. In general terms this huge book could be described as a series of histories, essays, recollections and anecdotes, richly complemend by a prolific collection of illustrations. Every aspect of life on the coast, from early explorations, the gold rush days and subsequent economic factors, transport difficulties, frequent shipwrecks, disasters natural or otherwise, prominant historic and contemporary identities, to civic affairs, sport and recreation, plus tributes to pioneer settlers -- drawn from many parts of the world, who all contributed to the development of the unique " West Coaster" community. Perhaps this nostalgic image is reflected by one photograph of a group of miners (c1866) outside a hotel and captioned "Everybody who does not dig sells grog, and everybody who digs, drinks copiously." No doubt attitudes have changed drastically, but the "West Coaster" retains the character of their pioneers --- independent, staunchly loyal to their forebears and region, as rugged as the West Coast terrain and proud of being a "Coaster" above all. "The Golden Grey" will long be regarded as a treasure in its own right. It was first piblished in 2010 with this second edition released in October 2012, 513 pages including index .An outstanding feature of the book is ithe excellence and extent of its illustrations which include historic and contemporary photographs some colour with others tinted, a number of its art reproductions also appear in colour as do some of the many document reproductions and drawings, also maps and diagrams. Black laminated hard covers have colour photos to front board with a further selection of historic and contemporary photos to rear board, The covers are VG+ with a small blemish top front corner (possibly where a price sticker was removed}, Internally NF, no inscriptions. The size and weight of the book, more than 3 kgs, would involve higher postrage/delivery costs.

Aggiungi al carrelloIndisputable Chondrinidae, Granariinae species, characterized by shell shape and apertural dentition, are known from Eocene deposits to the Recent. The generic classification of the extant species is based on conchological, anatomical and molecular data that are available now for most of the known species, including 'Granaria' persica as a representative of the once problematic group of so-called eastern Granaria species. According to molecular and anatomical characters, these eastern species have to be classified with Granopupa granum in Granopupa. Graniberia gen. n. is introduced for G. braunii on the basis of molecular and conchological data. For the pre-Pleistocene species, two generic names are equally well available now, viz. Granopupa and Granaria. Shell characters only do not enable a decision here. For the sake of nomenclatorial stability we propose to use Granaria for these species. Because both molecular and anatomical data most likely will never be known for the fossils, it will remain unclear whether the combined extant and extinct Granaria species form a monophyletic group. New taxon: Graniberia n. gen. 11 pp., 4 figs, gr. 8.
