Fine interior, clean and bright throughout, unmarked text, free of inscriptions and stamps, firmly bound. Boards show short creases to corners. Issued without a dust jacket. -- "The book features world-renowned scientists conducting cutting-edge research into how stress affects the human body and psyche. It introduces novel pharmaceuticals and equipment designed to sustain or enhance performance under stress. The focus is on the military model, ideal for studying human performance in both short- and long-term high-stress conditions. Modern soldiers face unprecedented operational demands: unpredictable enemy tactics, ambiguous loyalties, rapidly evolving weapons systems, and the need to process vast quantities of dynamic information. During high-tempo operations, they must maintain peak cognitive and physical performance despite prolonged periods of minimal or no sleep. While a freshly trained soldier may begin with optimal skill, the combination of cognitive strain, physical exhaustion, and sleep deprivation can impair the ability to apply learned skills in complex, real-world scenarios. The book explores how mental and physical workload and sleeplessness together alter awareness, decision-making, and physical capacity. These findings inform the development of deployable fitness-for-duty measures, help improve training protocols, and assess their effectiveness, enabling personnel to operate at maximum capacity under extreme conditions. The book's insights extend beyond the military to fields like emergency medicine, law enforcement, and disaster response. Distinct from earlier publications, it presents state-of-the-art neuroscience data in a format accessible to professionals from varied backgrounds. It not only discusses behavior and perception but also integrates brain imagery and physiological evidence. The use of the soldier model throughout anchors each chapter in real-world relevance, connecting science to operational challenges. The book synthesizes hard data with field experience to show how institutions like the US Army can measure, monitor, and enhance human performance." -- Contents: 1 Introduction; Part I. Aggiungi al carrelloBuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware -Biotechnology is advancing at a rapid pace with numerous applications in medicine, industry, agriculture and environmental remediation. Recognizing this, government, industrial and academic research and development invest ment in biotechnology has expanded rapidly. The past decade has seen the emergence of applications of this technology with a dual-use potential. Mili tary applications focus on four major areas: biomedical technology, such as vaccine development and medical diagnostics; detection of toxins, chemicals and pathogens; material biotechnology; and biological decontamination, in cluding biodegradation and bioremediation. This conference emphasizes the non-medical applications of biotechnol ogy. The first two sessions focus on the synthesis and properties of molecules that may be used in detectors. The traditional approach to detection of chemical and biological agents relied on the development of specific assays or analyses for known agents. Advances in molecular biology have made possible the production of large quantities of toxins which were previously available in minute quantities, and the molecular engineering of toxins and pathogens with specific pharmacologic and physical-chemical properties. In addition to the traditional approaches to detection of specific known compounds, biotechnology now offers generic approaches to detection. Physiological targets, known as receptors, are primary targets for many drugs and toxins. Similarly, pathogens rely on receptors to gain access to cells. These receptors function as sensitive detectors, generating signals which are transduced and amplified.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 476 pp. Englisch.
