Bolduc left Montreal September 12, 1841 and arrived at Fort Vancouver, September 15, 1842 by way of Cape Horn, Tahiti and Hawaii. "A valuab…le account of the life and times, of the difficulties and consolations, of a scholarly clergyman, well-trained in the humanities, the classics of Rome and Greece and physical scinces. Abbe Jean Baptiste Zacharie Bolduc, a man of deep faith, left his family and friends to travel afar to the Oregon Territory to dedicate himself to become a missionary to the Indians. Trained in the sciences of the day, his observations given to the physical aspects of his journey are invaluable. Also, later while at Cowlitz he records the eruption of Mt. St. Helens in March 1843. Eloquently Bulduc writes of the islands of Pacific Oceania. The Indian culture was not prepared to meet head-on with the White man's culture as the lower class of the Whites by their drunkenness and immoralities left a big question in the natives' minds." - Introduction.
