La obra estudia, entre otros aspectos, la medición física del sonido, el funcionamiento del sistema auditivo, la interferencia del ruido en la comunicación oral, los riesgos de daño auditivo, la percepción subjetiva de la molestia sonora, el ruido comunitario, los criterios de evaluación ambiental y las respuestas no auditivas del organismo. Por su amplitud y precisión, conserva interés para investigadores, especialistas en acústica, médicos laborales, ingenieros ambientales, urbanistas, psicólogos experimentales e historiadores de la ciencia aplicada al entorno moderno. El ejemplar destaca además por su diseño editorial característico de la producción científica de Academic Press de fines de los años 60 y comienzos de los 70: sobrio, técnico, con una cubierta negra y dorada de fuerte presencia gráfica, donde el motivo visual de la figura humana rodeada por líneas de propagación sonora resume de manera notable el tema central del volumen.
