Louis Duval publie dans l'Annuaire de l'Orne, de 1883 à 1887, les cahiers des paroisses du bailliage d'Alençon et, en 1888 et 1889, ceux des paroisses du bailliage de Mortagne. Puis en 1929, René Jouanne se charge de l'édition des cahiers des corporations alençonnaises. Seuls restaient à imprimer ceux des paroisses du bailliage d'Exmes. Le présent ouvrage répond à cette lacune. Chaque cahier est publié intégralement. Seul le procès-verbal de l'assemblée de bailliage a fait l'objet de plus larges extraits qui permettent de mieux comprendre le déroulement de la réunion des députés des paroisses. Les cahiers de paroisse offrent un large éventail de revendications qui embrasse la plupart des domaines de la vie politique, économique, sociale, religieuse, voire culturelle.
