Bien mal lui en prit. Carmigniani et Tranié restituent ce conflit long et particulièrement terrible. Tranié s'est appuyé sur les notes du célèbre Commandant Lachouque pour rédiger son texte, Carmigniani a construit une iconographie solide et bien choisie. Plus de 400 illustrations en N/N, plus de 30 pages couleurs dont de superbes planches d'uniformes de Louis de Beaufort. Superbe ! Les livres de Jean Tranié et Juan-Carlos Carmigniani (aujourd'hui tous les deux disparus) reposent tous sur une même et parfaite alchimie : le texte de Tranié est particulièrement bien écrit, dans un français classique, riche, épique ; le récit des opérations militaires est précis et explicatif et il est émaillé de nombreuses anecdotes dramatiques ou croustillantes ; enfin, le travail de recherche iconographique de Carmigniani est d'une richesse incroyable et est mis en valeur par un art très accompli de la légende qui fait mouche pour les accompagner. Dans ce volume de 250 pages sur un conflit réellement à part au sein de l'épopée napoléonienne, Jean Tranié parvient à porter un regard lucide : « Mal connue et mal aimée, car ressentie comme une faute de l'empereur, cette guerre l'est aussi parce qu'elle a souvent donné mauvaise conscience aux vainqueurs de l'Europe. Cette fois, ce n'était plus un despote ou une caste aristocratique qu'il fallait combattre mais un peuple tout entier dressé contre l'Antéchrist et sur lequel passait le souffle de la fierté patriotique. Commencée au Portugal en 1807, terminée à Toulouse en 1814, la campagne de la péninsule préfigure les guerres modernes de libération » affirme ainsi l'auteur dans son avant-propos. Le livre parvient ensuite, et c'est essentiel, à rendre hommage aux souffrances terribles de combattants de cette guerre, tout en en donnant un récit compréhensible : guerre classique entre Napoléon et ses maréchaux contre les Anglais de Moore et Wellington et leurs alliés ; guérilla et contre guérilla sans pitié dans tout le pays. L'ouvrage est une véritable référence, particulièrement bien illustrée, sur son sujet difficile. Les planches d'uniformes qui illustrent l'ouvrage sont de Louis de Beaufort. Couvert avec soin.La campagne de Napoléon Ier en Espagne est un épisode de la guerre d'indépendance espagnole qui correspond à la venue de l'empereur français Napoléon dans la péninsule Ibérique, de novembre 1808 à janvier 1809, afin de réprimer le soulèvement antifrançais qui agitait l'Espagne depuis le mois de mai 1808. Cette intervention fut motivée par le besoin de réparer les graves échecs subis dans ce secteur par l'armée impériale au cours de l'année 1808. Après avoir concentré ses troupes, dont une partie de la Grande Armée tout juste arrivée d'Allemagne, Napoléon ordonna à partir du 5 novembre une série de manuvres coordonnées qui s'acheva, malgré les difficultés d'exécution et certaines erreurs de ses lieutenants, par la dislocation des forces espagnoles et la déroute de leur corps principal. L'Empereur exploita son succès et occupa rapidement Madrid, rétablissant la domination française sur les régions centrale et septentrionale de la péninsule.À la suite de cette victoire, Napoléon se retourna contre le corps expéditionnaire britannique qui s'était avancé en territoire espagnol et le contraignit à un rembarquement précipité, même si l'état du terrain et le climat particulièrement défavorable empêchèrent sa destruction complète. La menace d'une guerre imminente avec l'Autriche et les intrigues politiques fomentées pendant son absence décidèrent l'Empereur à quitter l'Espagne le 17 janvier 1809 et à retourner en toute hâte à Paris. En dépit des succès remportés par ses troupes lors de cette campagne, jamais Napoléon ne revint parachever sa conquête, se contentant de laisser en Espagne d'importants contingents qui s'y usèrent pendant les cinq années à venir.
