In diesen lange Zeit kaum bekannten Heime…n wurden Kinder von osteuropäischen Zwangsarbeiterinnen unter häufig sehr widrigen Bedingungen untergebracht, viele der Säuglinge verstarben an Unterernährung und mangelnder Versorgung. Die Überlebenden lernten in vielen Fällen ihre Eltern nie kennen und litten bzw. leiden ihr Leben lang darunter. Sie zählen zu den letzten noch lebenden Opfern der NS-Zeit. Dieser entwürdigende und brutale Umgang mit den Kindern jener Menschen, die in 'Oberdonau' in Industrie und Landwirtschaft Zwangsarbeit verrichten mussten, steht im größeren Zusammenhang der rassistischen Bevölkerungspolitik des NS-Regimes und seines Umgangs mit den 'rassisch Minderwertigen'.Seit dem Frühjahr 2017 widmete sich eine Projektgruppe, die am Lern- und Gedenkort Schloss Hartheim angesiedelt ist, der Erstellung des vorliegenden Sammelbands. Die Gruppe besteht aus Mitarbeitern des Lern- und Gedenkorts sowie LokalhistorikerInnen und GedenkaktivistInnen. Ziel des Projekts war es, bereits bestehende Forschungen mit neuen Forschungsergebnissen zusammenzuführen, offene Fragen zu klären und zu möglichst vielen der Heime - es waren rund ein Dutzend auf dem Gebiet des 'Gaues Oberdonau' - einen geschichtlichen Überblick samt Verortung der Standorte und damit in Zusammenhang stehender Einrichtungen (z.B. Zwangsarbeitslager) zu erstellen. Ein weiteres Ziel der Publikation soll es auch sein, lokale Gedenkarbeit zu initiieren und zu fördern.
