Soft cover. Condizione: Near Fine. No Jacket. EUGENE IONESCO, A MODERN CLASSIC (The Grove Press Guide to Eugene Ionesco), Rosette C. Lamont, softcover, 1995. ITEM CONDITION: near fine. The text block is in fine condition, with no tears, dogears, or marks. No bookplate or signature of a prior owner. Not a library item or remainder. The wraps are in near fine condition (slight curling in upper righthand corner). 8 ¼ x 5 ¼, 31 pages, 3 ounces XX [From the text] In A Talk about the Avant-Garde, the inaugural lecture Eugune lonesco delivered at the Helsinki Debates on the Avant-Garde Theater in June 1959, the dramatist opened with a mock-serious statement: I am, it seems, an avant-garde dramatist. He went on to question the notion of what constitutes avant-garde writing, defining it as opposition and rupture rather than a pre-style. The term was also used in France to identify literary theater as opposed to the theatre du boulevard. The amazing phenomenon is that this art theater becomes in the course of time the new classical literature. lonesco takes two dramatists as striking examples of this process: Maurice Donnay and Henri Bataille. As avant-garde writers, they expressed a rupture, a new departure and an opposing force. However, they finally merged into the theatrical tradition. lonesco adds: This is what must happen to every good avant-gardist. Indeed, this is what happened to lonesco himself, an enfant terrible who became one of the immortels of the Académie Fransaise. lonesco's literary philosophy collected in Notes et contre-notes (1962; Notes and Counter Notes, 1964) was followed by what the author himself defined as a New Manifesto: The Writer and his Problems," first published in Encounter (Summer 1964, Vol. XXIII, No. 3). In the course of this magnificent meditation on his art, the playwright states that the artist or writer, like the philosopher or the scientist, puts forward his truth, the truth or reality of his person, an unexpected reality, unexpected for himself too, a revelation. Like men of science, artists do not invent, they discover. At first there is a kind of strangeness about a discovery, but later it becomes normality. Once it is taken for granted, it seems it was always there. Assimilated, integrated, it is revealed as eternal.
