Paperback. Pink illustrated wraps with yellow and black lettering; 87 pp.; richly illustrated in color. Lari Pittman's meticulously rendered paintings employ a complex mix of symbols and images to create dense and compelling narratives on love, violence, and desire. Drawing upon design, folk art, and decorative traditions, Pittman's brightly colored paintings incorporate and rework a range of styles and genres--Victorian silhouettes, social realist murals, and Mexican retablos--to conjure a hallucinatory effect unique in contemporary painting. Pittman has earned numerous accolades in the art world and has been included in the Venice Biennale, Documenta X, and four Whitney Biennials. -- WorldCat. Good (EX-LIBRARY, indicated only by a stamp on the ffep; wraps are sunned and worn lightly overall; texblock edges are lightly worn/scuffed/smudged; interior is clean; binding is solid.).

Hardcover. Condizione: As New. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fine. First Edition. Lee Mullican's paintings and drawings map the inner space of the mind and the outer space of the cosmos. Over a 50-year career, in works bursting with color, he sought a window onto the unconscious, without relinquishing the control of a skilled draftsman or references to the world around him. Influenced by Native American art and Surrealism, as well as Eastern religions like Buddhism and Hinduism, in 2005 Mullican's formidable oeuvre gets an overdue retrospective, organized by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. This exhibition catalogue is the most comprehensive collection of his work and includes an essay by organizing curator Carol S. Eliel and an homage to Mullican as a teacher and mentor by fellow Los Angeles painter Lari Pittman. Like another Lee (Bontecou) whose quiet career of working and teaching recently got a deserving retrospective, Mullican will emerge here as an American original.

Soft cover. Condizione: Fine. Color Plates (illustratore). Not Indicated. Lari Pittman (born 1952 in Los Angeles, California) is an American painter. His American father met his Colombian mother while the former was working abroad in the latter's homeland. Lari Pittman is a Distinguished Professor at the UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture. Pittman received his MFA from Cal Arts in 1976. There he met his life partner, abstract painter Roy Dowell with whom he has lived ever since. He is now a professor at UCLA (an institution which he once attended, but, from which he did not earn a degree). In 1996 his work was the subject of a mid career survey at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. In David Pagel's interview with Pittman, he concludes that Pittman's paintings include "imaginary organic forms, runaway arrows, and arabesques, transform ornamentation into a contemporary narrative of life and death, love and sex." He also believes "Pittman's operatic pictures propose that the world's complexity does not override passion, sincerity, and individuality." When talking about his own work, Pittman states: "at times, I purposefully orchestrate the work so that you do have that comfortable laughter when looking at it?it's fullhearted and enjoyable internally?but it's also a laughter linked to nervousness. And that's the laughter I particularly like cultivating, parlor laughter, where there's always the subtext of conversation going on, but everyone is very agreeable." Pittman is included in several distinguished art collections including the Eli and Edythe Broad collection at The Broad in Los Angeles, United States.

Light shelfwear to boards. *** "Originally from Los Angeles, Lari Pittman has been exhibiting since the 1980s and teaches painting at the University of California since 1993. He works in series, producing repertoires of motifs. Each one of them associates a painting of large format, carried out on several panels, with paintings of variable dimensions. On smooth, shiny surfaces, a profusion of objects, signs, and non-hierarchical symbols is entangled. Easily recognizable figurative elements are articulated with abstract shapes and ornamental elements. Each painting constitutes a complex network combining current or personal references, borrowing from the history of the decorative arts, wallpaper and textiles. This profusion creates a dense composition, animated by a great vitality, in which the space is totally saturated." - Publisher. *** CONTENTS: Midnight in the painting of good and evil = Minuit dans la peinture de bien et du mal, by Francesco Bonami; Polarized: the recent work of Lari Pittman = Polarisee: le travail recent de Lari Pittman, by Alison M. Gingeras; Contemplative frenzy: sticking to the surface with Lari Pittman = Frenesie contemplative: s'en tenir a` la surface avec Lari Pittman, by Doug Harvey. Size: 4to. Collectible.
