Each story has a different topic with varied lead characters including animals, adults, children, guerrillas, and mental health patients. The stories are variously suspenseful, thought provoking, slightly disturbing, and/or amusing. Many have surprise endings, which led to the book's title. The book is divided into two sections. The first section contains 12 short stories as described above. The second section contains a single, much longer, science fiction novelette. "The Planet Survey" describes the activities of a group of space aliens surveying distant planets to find a new home for their race. The aliens desperately need to relocate to a new planet because their current home planet, Keplerin, will soon be destroyed by asteroids. In addition to assessing candidate planet gravity, atmosphere, and other physical features, they employ a Thought Consensus Indicator to assess the collective aggressive tendencies of existing intelligent inhabitants of surveyed planets. The survey team arrives at Earth shortly before the Boston Marathon bombing and recommendations from their survey change as a result of the bombing. The story interweaves technology innovations with political considerations in the presence of societal ignorance and propaganda. Broad usage of the Thought Consensus Indicator over multiple generations on Keplerin demonstrated the ability to change world cultures from aggressive to cooperative and could do the same for Earth. The book summarizes common taxpayer and tax system problems and suggests possible solutions to achieve the financial and sociological goals of our country. Although the VITA program provides great training materials for volunteers, the author was unable to find information about what his experience would be like as a tax preparer. He decided to pen this memoir in hopes that it may be useful to other new or prospective VITA volunteers as they prepare for and begin their own service to the taxpaying community. The book presents the life story of a 95 year old house in southeastern Montana that the author's grandparents built and in which his brother and family still live. In this book it is referred to as "The Klos Family House". Since the author's parents and contemporaries who might remember the house and the times are nearly all deceased, the narrative builds upon the memories of the author and friends, relatives, neighbors, and siblings. The story begins with German immigrants homesteading to improve their lives in southeastern Montana during a string of wet years in the early 1900's. It continues through the drought and depression of subsequent years that bankrupted many settlers. The story follows three generations of the Klos family as they successively fight to succeed and as they gradually enlarge the Klos Family House. Now, with the third generation, the original house has been totally surrounded by expansions on all four sides. The house itself narrates the story of its initial construction and growth and of events that occurred or were discussed within its walls.
