Published Price £9.50 Of the 18 VCs awarded to the Royal Regiment of Artillery during the Great War, eight were won in the first three weeks, all for acts of gallantry carried out not only under enemy shellfire, but also under direct rifle and machine gun fire. The so-called Affair of Nery, an action fought on 1st September 1914, was one of these in which three VCs were awarded to âLâ Battery, RHA, which, since then, has been known as âNeryâ Battery in commemoration of that action. This story of the German Operations is based on General von Kluckâs March on Paris, Poseckâs German Cavalry in Belgium and France, the German Official Account and such Regimental Histories as were available. Use has also been made of the accounts of two of the German cavalry regiments involved - 18th Dragoons and 15th Hussars. The British positions are taken from Vol I of our Official History, from the account of The Fight at Nery, by the author and published in the RUSI Journal of May 1919, and from General (then Lt Col commanding 11H) T.T.Pitmanâs article on the action in the Cavalry Journal of April 1920. Part I in the book, headed "The Pursuitâ, describes the actions of the 4th German Cavalry Division, part of II Cavalry Corps, in the German advance through Belgium into France following up the BEF retreating from Mons till reaching the outskirts of Nery on 31st August where the British 1st Cavalry Brigade - 2 DG (Queenâs Bays), 5 DG and 11H with L Battery RHA - lay, under orders to be ready to resume their march at 0430 hours next day,1September. That morning there was thick mist and neither side was aware of the presence of the other till they bumped into each other. Part II, "the Chance Encounterâ describes how the battle developed, a battle in which German casualties totalled 162, the British 133 of which the heaviest loss was incurred by L Battery, 23 killed 31 wounded, which also lost 150 of its 228 horses. Part III describes the withdrawal of the German 4th Cavalry Division and offers comments on the result of the battle. Appendices give the German First Army and the 4th Cavalry division orders of battle, and a table with casualty details on both sides.Nery today is much as it was those ninety years ago; the British dead are buried in the French National Cemetery at Verberie, nine and a half miles SW of Compiegne where the Armistice would be signed just over four years later.

SB. v + 307ppPublished Price £9.50 The author of this unusual memoir of some of the less familiar campaigns of the Napoleonic Wars, Major Francis Maule, served with the 2nd (Queenâs) Regiment in Egypt and was on the staff of the brief and disastrous Walcheren expedition of 1809. His book - published in 1816, the year after Waterloo - is one of the earliest accounts by a British officer who took part in these campaigns. The Walcheren expedition was ambitious and expensive and involved landing some 40,000 British troops in Holland in an effort to support Britainâs continental allies against France. However, the expedition was decimated by disease before really coming to grips with the enemy, and was swiftly aborted. Earlier, Maule had served with the ill-fated Generals Sir John Moore and Sir Ralph Abercrombie in the campaign against the French armies that the young Napoleon had abandoned in Egypt. His book vividly describes the fighting around Alexandria, Rosetta and Cairo; the killing of the French commander, General Kleber, and the final surrender of his successor General Belliard. Mauleâs memoir concludes with descriptions of his other Mediterranean postings including Minorca, Gibraltar and the Spanish town of Ronda.

It was formed by the amalgamation of the former auxiliary institutions of the Volunteer Force and the yeomanry. Designed primarily as a home defence force, its members could not be compelled to serve overseas unless they volunteered to do so. On the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, many did. The first units were deployed piecemeal in support of the regular army as it defended against the opening German offensive in Belgium and France in 1914. The first territorial divisions to be deployed were used to free up imperial garrisons overseas, but in 1915 they began to be deployed to the front lines on the Western Front and at Gallipoli. The pre-war territorial divisions were numbered in May 1915 in order of their deployment. As they were deployed, second-line divisions were raised to replace them at home, and in 1916 these began to be deployed to combat zones. By the end of the war in 1918, the Territorial Force had provided 28 divisions and 14 mounted brigades. Also by Major J Stirling and published by Naval & Military PressOUR REGIMENTS IN SOUTH AFRICA 1899-1902. SB. 299 pp IllustratedPublished Price £14.50 The siege of Mafeking is a legendary event in British history, and not only for its military importance in reversing the fortunes of the Boer War and giving Britainâs national morale a massive fillip at a very low ebb. Its lasting importance, however, lies in the innovative defence conducted by its commander, Col. Robert Baden-Powell, who later found fame as the founder of the Boy Scout movement. This book is an account of the siege by an expert insider who endured the experience at Baden-Powellâs side. Major F. D. Baillie was a former Hussar officer who later became a war correspondent for the Morning Post newspaper. His illustrated book shows both the privations of the siege, and also the ingenuity employed by Mafekingâs defenders - an armoured train, an old Naval cannon, emergency bank notes, and fake barbed wire - to successfully withstand the siege.

SB 55pp + Plates & MapPublished Price £9.95 Among the many problems attending the British forces who landed in North Russia in 1919-19 to aid the White troops in their doomed attempt to resist and reverse the Bolshevik revolution, the care and evacuation of sick and wounded soldiers was especially difficult. The harsh terrain and cold climate presented the Royal Army Medical Corps with unprecedented troubles, and how they were surmounted is the subject of this informative booklet. Written by the senior medical officer with the force, the book shows why, âin the depths of the Russian forest a box of matches may be of more value for the saving of life than many elaborate and more technical appliancesâ and why speed and light equipment were of the essence in evacuating casualties before they froze to death.

SB. xii + 212pp with 10 maps Published Price £18 On 14th January, 1915, a letter from the War Office to the Mayor of Camberwell authorised the recruiting of a brigade of field artillery (156th Brigade R.F.A). The local response was so prompt that further authority was given to raise another brigade in the same neighbourhood, to be designated 162nd Brigade R.F.A. and this was done by mid May. It was then brought to the attention of the WO that a mass of would-be recruits still remained in the Camberwell Borough, enough to complete the whole of the artillery for the 33rd Division, a Kitchener division of the Fourth New Army. The two additional field artillery brigades needed were numbered 166th and 167th (Howitzer), and the divisional ammunition column (33rd D.A.C)was also formed. This book took nearly two years to complete and throughout that time the author maintained the closest collaboration with the official war diaries, personal diaries, letters and experiences of individuals and every sort of reliable information to produce an accurate and complete record of the doings of the batteries in France. An appendix contains a list of the casualties suffered by the divisional artillery (officers by name, other ranks numerically) during the war, another shows all the other divisions supported by 33rd Divisional Artillery, when and where; a third appendix shows the various sectors of the line where the batteries were in action, with dates and official names of the battles in which they were engaged. In the text are twelve tables showing the names of the HQ Staff, brigade commanders, adjutants and battery commanders at various stages of the war.
