Charles Newton contributed numerous innovative ideas and designs to the firearms industry between the years of 1905 and 1932. His ballistic experimentations using the premise of a large shell case for caliber to attain high velocity, led to the development of many new cartridges from .22 to .40 caliber, a few of which were the .22 Savage High Power, .250-3000 Savage, .22 Newton, .256 Newton, .30 Newton, .35 Newton and .40 Newton. Newton marketed high power rifles from 1914 to the late 1920s. He imported rifles from Germany in 1914 and 1922 and manufactured two models of Newton rifles using his own design ideas. The Second Edition of The Newton Rifleis the most complete source of information available concerning Charles Newton and his contributions to the firearms industry. The data in this volume was completed using over 100 historical and contemporary sources of reference to present the complete history and details of the Newton story. All models of Newton rifles are detailed: 1914 Rifle Group, First Model 1916, Model 1922, Second Model 1924 Buffalo Newton rifle and the LeverBolt rifle. Standard and factory available options, mechanical workings of each model. one-of-a-kind rifles and developments that never came to be are discussed in this book. Some of the information included herein has never been presented by any other source, i.e. a rifle from the first and only shipment of 24 rifles imported by Newton in 1914 and an original custom rifle made by Fred Adolph in caliber .40 Newton. It directs that 20 pounds sterling be paid to Deputy Quartermaster Pomeroy out of the "Tax of Two Shillings and Six Pence on the Pound, granted by the General Assembly in May last, and charge the State." It is signed by Eleazer Wales and Hezekiah Rogers as members of the Committee of the Pay-Table. Rogers has signed vertically across the signature of Wales, as was his habit. Signed in type by Connecticut State Treasurer, John Lawrence. Ralph Pomeroy (1737-1819) was responsible for paying soldiers and making other disbursements in his role as Deputy Quartermaster and paymaster. Pomeroy has endorsed the order on the reverse. This simple document served an important purpose in financing the Revolutionary War in Connecticut, is signed by three influential citizens of that state, and is a tangible relic of those momentous days. Sheet has an old fold crease horizontally lengthwise, with short, closed tears at each end, and a few tiny chips to edges. Slight toning, else fine. Single sheet. Approximately 4" x 6 5/8".…
