Bevorzugtes Material waren ursprünglich Wurzelholz, Elfenbein, aber auch Wal- und Walrosszähne, Holz, insbesondere Buchsbaum, Bambus, Hirschhorn und weitere. Sie entstanden im ausgehenden 17.
