Bd. IV, I. Hälfte (4.1) - Ad 1: In Hinsicht auf den Forschungsstand relativ frühe Arbeit über die Cholera, deren Auftreten in Mitteleuropa auf die 1830er Jahre zu datieren ist. Die Symptome wurden gemäss dem geringen Wissensstand interpretiert und entsprechende Heilungsmethoden und -Mittel empfohlen: "Die Cholera scheint wie der Schnupfen oder die gewöhnliche Ruhr eine Erkältungskrankheit zu seyn." (Anon., Kurzer Bericht und Belehrung über den Verlauf und die Heilung der Cholera-Krankheit. Prag 1831, p. 4). Als Prophylaxe oder quasi präventive Heilmethode werden hygienische Massnahmen (ibid. p. 12) und als hausmedizinische Mittel u.a. Umschläge mit kaltem Wasser und Essig sowie Inhalationen empfohlen. Pharmakologisch bewegte man sich noch im Dunkeln, jedoch wird als "ein besonders guten Erfolg darbietendes Heilmittel [.] das salpetersaure Wismutoxyd von mehreren Aerzten anempfohlen." (ibid. p. 19) - Brockhaus (4, 1968) umschreibt die Cholera (asiatica) als eine im Gangestal Indiens endemische und sich von dort zeitweise epidemisch weithin ausbreitende akute infektiöse Darmkrankheit. - Die Jahre um 1830 sind ein für die Ausbreitung dieser Krankheit besonders in Europa dramatischer Markstein. "1830/1831 begünstigten die Massenbewegungen des russisch-polnischen Krieges die weitere Verschleppung nach Mitteleuropa. Dabei floss ein die polnisch-preussische Grenze überflutender Seuchenstrom mit einem von Danzig kommenden zusammen. Dorthin hatte ein russisches Kriegsschiff die Infektion gebracht. [.] Die Sterblichkeit war entsetzlich. [.] Man spürt in dem damaligen, lawinenartig rasch angeschwollenen Laienschrifttum über die Cholera noch den panischen Schrecken." (H. "Am stärksten geprägt wurde er von seinem Lehrer Felix Niemeyer [.]. Ihm folgte er 1860 als Assistent nach Tübingen, wo er [.] 1864 zum Extraordinarius für Pathologische Anatomie ernannt wurde. 1865 wurde er als Professor für Pathologie und Medizinische Klinik an die neugeschaffene medizinische Universitätsklinik in Basel berufen. In seiner Basler Zeit (1865-1871) erwarb er sich hohes Ansehen nicht nur durch seine experimentellen Studien über die Wärmeregulation, sondern auch durch die erfolgreiche Bekämpfung einer Typhusepidemie. 1871 wurde er als Nachfolger Niemeyers nach Tübingen berufen und wirkte dort bis zu seinem Tode.
