Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Good Plus. This is apparently a privately printed catalogue from the collection of John W. Campbell. It consists of mostly Persian carpets with some Turkish silk carpets from the late 19th century. There are descriptions of a total of 106 carpets. According to other sellers, this book was published around…1925. I'm pretty certain that none of the books for sale have dates in them. The feel and look of the book suggests that the time frame is probably pretty accurate. A few other sellers are referring to their books as first editions. I'm not sure how you can do that if there's no date or statement in the book. Not that it isn't a first edition, it probably is, because there probably was only one edition, but that would apply to all the books for sale. The book is thicker than the 106 pages of text would suggest. That is because the versos of the text pages are blank and because there are 24 full-page illustrations that do not have page numbers. Other sellers are referencing 24 as the number of illustrations so I went through every page and counted. I can now state with certainty that all 24 of the illustrations are present. They are also in excellent condition. The book has a linen spine (and just adjacent, front and rear) with blue-green paper-wrapped boards. Most of the sellers are referring to it as a hardcover, one referred to it as a soft cover. This book has some positives and negatives with regard to condition. You can see the covers in the photos. Both the front and rear have creasing. There is also a good deal of rub-through at the top and bottom edges. You can see what that looks like by looking at the corners in the photos. The lettering on the spine is decently bright but gets a little lost in the texture of the fabric. The top and bottom page edges are free of any conspicuous soiling. The middle page edge has several small dark spots. On around 20 pages the spots just barely peek over the middle edge of the pages, obviously very far from the print or illustrations. The pages are otherwise exceptionally clean. In turning over the text pages and pages with illustrations I saw no more than a few speck-sized spots. The white, or beige, inside covers and end papers have only some mild spotting and toning. There also doesn't seem to be any conspicuous creasing on the pages. There are no markings. No attachments. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. Finally, positively, the book is very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout, and nicely tight covers as well. 'John Williams Campbell (1880-1957) was a millionaire American financier and railroad executive. He kept an office at Grand Central Terminal in New York City, which was later converted into a bar called the Campbell Apartment, a popular gathering spot for commuters and others after work. In 1923, Campbell commissioned Augustus N. Allen, an architect known for designing estates on Long Island and townhouses in Manhattan, to build an office in the leased space in Grand Central. He transformed it into a 13th-century Florentine palace with a hand-painted plaster of Paris ceiling and leaded windows. He installed 19th-century Italian chairs and tables, an art collection worth more than $1 million, and a massive desk from which he conducted business. One of the most striking features was a Persian carpet that took up the entire floor and was said to have cost $300,000 at the time, or roughly $3.5 million today.'.
