A nice copy in a rare very good dust jacket of the 60th thousand edition (c1949) of Hutchinson's famous huge anthology featuring celebrated supernatural fiction from the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, including works by M.R. James and Bram Stoker. The collection covers various styles ranging from traditional Gothic tales to early 20th-century psychological and weird fiction. Internally, pages are good with no inscriptions, no notes or annotations at all. There is tanning to page edges (typical in this edition) and some foxing most especially in early pages. Binding is very good. Some clear bowing and give to the book though no impact structurally. Quite possibly bowing could be remedied or reduced by the proper storage. Classic green cloth is in an excellent condition: seemingly the DJ has done its job for many years. Cloth is bright and clean, famous Skelton to cover and ghost to spine are both remarkably good. Aside from general give/bowing mentioned, green cloth and illustrations are the best we have seen in any edition of this book. Unclipped DJ is also very nice, especially the front cover which is clean and crisp just a couple of small tears and general age. Spine is very nice, a little nibbling to top and bottom of jacket. Rear has more nibbling to top edge, an a little darkening but overall very good. Front flap has the complete price and is in good condition though brown spotted. Likewise rear inner flap.
