Sbiadito il dorso della sovraccoperta, fioritura ai tagli di testa. Fra il 1918 e il 1924 Haarmann massacrò 27 giovani, con i quali aveva avuto rapporti sessuali, azzannandoli alla gola e bevendone il sangue. I resti mutilati delle vittime venivano da lui venduti e gettati nel fiume. A lungo nessuno se ne accorse e quando ebbe inizio il processo, tra il pubblico, c'era anche Theodor Lessing, uno dei più radicali critici della cultura della Germania di allora. Lessing fu l'unico a capire Haarmann, mostro predestinato. Dietro il caso criminale, volle scandagliare una di quelle oscure "anomalie della natura" in cui si intrecciano "la vita amorosa e il desiderio di morte, la volontà di annientare l'altro e la volontà di essere annientati".
