The Kennemerlant pleasure houses, country residences of the Amsterdam bourgeoisie, encompass fine gardens in the Dutch Régence style (which emerged c.1720) where natural elements have begun to supercede the formal French-influenced layouts. The 100 views and plans illustrated here are of some 40 estates in this area north of Haarlem; the 10 plans and bird's-eye views being of Marquette, Meerestein, Velzer-beek, Waterlant, Biezenvelt, Papenburg, Spyk, Duin-en-Berg, Velzerhooft and Uit den Bosch; an engraved map shows their location. Subtitles are in Dutch and French and the main text gives a short history of the building and ownership of each. The compact houses are noticeably subordinate to the elaborate gardens which display grass parterres, water in bassins, allées and walls of high clipped hedges. The outer perimeters are shown to embrace scenes of village and canal life, animals at pasture and ruined mansions. Two domains are strikingly innovative, that of Waterlant (c.1720) which 'anticipated the picturesque garden' (Oxford Companion to Gardens) and was constructed as a labyrinth with novel features terminating its radiating allées ('a camera obscura projecting moving pictures of boats on a nearby lake, and a Turkish tent'), and Duin-en-Berg (c.1730), the 'earliest example of an asymmetrical plan within a geometric framework', and which takes in the natural landscape by making a feature of its background of hilly North Sea sand dune.
