Beide Teile des erstmals 1596 erschienenen bedeutsamen italienischen Sprachwörterbuchs vom flandrischen Sprachlehrer Levin Hulsius (1550-1606), der sich als Glaubensflüchtling 1583 in Frankenthal (Pfalz, damals Bayern) niederließ, wo er eine private französische Schule unterhielt. Es ist neben seinem französisch-deutschen Wörterbuch sein wohl bedeutendstes lexikographische Werk. "Nach der von der Stadt erzwungenen Schließung der Schule kündigte er 1589 sein Bürgerrecht in Frankenthal und übersiedelte nach Nürnberg. Dort war H. als Sprachlehrer, Notar, Schriftsteller und im Handel mit mathematisch-astronomischen Geräten tätig. Seit 1596 wirkte er darüber hinaus als Verleger, zuletzt in Frankfurt/Main. In mehreren Auflagen erschienen von H. deutsch-französische (1596) und deutsch-italienische Wörterbücher (1605), seit 1599 in eigener Übersetzung aus dem Niederländischen ins Deutsche die ersten Schiffahrts- und Entdeckungsberichte ."
