Prima edizione Copia autografata
Trade paperback. Presumed first edition/first printing. Glued binding. xiii, [1], 185, [1] p. Illustrations, black & white. Irene Levin Berman was born, raised and educated in Norway, after which she moved to the U.S. as a young bride. Her first conscious recollection of life goes back to 1942, when as a child she had to escape to Sweden, a neutral country, with her immediate family. Germany had invaded Norway and the persecution of the 2000 Norwegian Jews was initiated. 771 persons were deported and sent to Auschwitz, including seven members of Irene's father s family. Irene's book is a narrative of a journey back in time. Irene's strong dual identity as a Norwegian and a Jew forced her to explore a multitude of previously unopened doors. This is not a description of the Holocaust alone, but the memories of growing up Jewish in Norway during and after World War II. The richness of having both a Norwegian and Jewish culture ultimately provided her with a third identity--that of an American. Very good. Signed by author. Signed on t-p,

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Discussing the relationship between social work and sociology, this book explores how the two have become more and more divided, moving from one single discipline, to two separate, but related, fields. Both sociology and social work focus on social problems, social structure, social integration and how individuals respond to and live within cultural and structural constraints. Today, both disciplines face the possibility of losing some of their most important characteristics to individualising trends, the disappearance of the importance of the social and pressure towards solely evidence-based knowledge. In addition to casting light on areas that have been in the shadows of the mainstream narrative, the contributions to this book will raise new questions, contributing to continuing discussions between and within each discipline. This book was originally published as a special issue of Nordic Social Work Research. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Everyday Silence and the Holocaust examines Irene Levins experiences of her familys unspoken history of the Holocaust and the silence that surrounded their war experiences as non-topics.A central example of what C. Wright Mills considered the core of sociology the intersection of biography and history the book covers the process by which the author came to understand that notes found in her mothers apartment following her death were not unimportant scribbles, but in fact contained elements of her mothers biographical narrative, recording her parents escape from occupied Norway to unoccupied Sweden in late 1942. From the mid-1990s, when society began to open up about the atrocities committed against the Jews, so too did the author find that her mother and the wider Jewish population ceased to be silent about their war experiences and began to talk. Charting the process by which the author traced the familys broader history, this book explores the use of silence, whether in the family or in society more widely, as a powerful analytic tool and examines how these silences can intertwine. This book provides insight into social processes often viewed through a macro-historical lens by way of analysis of the life of an "ordinary" Jewish woman as a survivor. An engaging, grounded study of the biographical method in sociology and the role played by silence, this book will appeal to readers with an interest in the Holocaust and World War II, as well as in social scientific research methods. It will be of use to both undergraduate and postgraduate scholars in the fields of history, social science, psychology, philosophy, and the history of ideas. The Open Access version of this book, available at , has been made available under a Creative Commons [Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives (CC-BY-NC-ND)] 4.0 license.
