Aggiungi al carrello8vo. x, [2], 321, [1] pp. Photo frontisp., numerous photo plates. Dark blue publisher's cloth, small colour illustration of Shanty-Boat "Ark" mounted on front cover, gilt lettering front cover & spine, w/ d.j. cover art illustration by Charles Reed Gardner (1901-1974) of the "Ark" and Mississippi River boat (minor chipping head of spine, a couple closed tears, some edgwear), still VG/VG- copy, w/ former ownership markings on endpapers. First edition of this scarce, entertaining, and insightful account of a 1930 shanty-boat trip, down the Mississippi by two journalists for over 1675 miles from St. Paul, MN to New Orleans, LA, despite experienced Mississippi River men laying bets on how far the craft would get before wrecking on the River. They traveled for four months gliding past countless towns tumbling into ruin, stayed in lonely bayous and former steamboat landings, met hermits, escaped convicts, show-boat actors, old logging captains, moonshiners, and others along the River. Issued on the eve of the Great Depression, and the subsequent New Deal, this was one of the last memoirs of traveling the river before locks and dams constrained and changed the flow of the river. Rare in original dustjacket.…

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. "Shanty-Boat" is an immersive travel narrative that follows Kent and Margaret Lighty on a remarkable four-month expedition down the Mississippi River. Traveling from St. Paul to New Orleans in a modest, motorless houseboat, the authors provide a vivid firsthand account of life along the "Father of Waters" during the late 1920s.The narrative captures the essence of a drifting existence, introducing readers to the diverse characters who inhabited the riverbanks-from fellow shanty-boaters and fishermen to small-town residents. As they navigate the currents, the Lightys document the changing landscape, the technical challenges of river travel, and the unique social atmosphere of the American interior. Their journey offers an intimate look at the transition between the old river ways and the modern era, blending adventure with observational wit and historical detail. This work stands as a significant piece of Americana, preserving the sights, sounds, and folklore of the Mississippi before the mid-twentieth century transformed its shores. "Shanty-Boat" remains a timeless exploration of freedom and discovery, appealing to those interested in maritime history, regional American culture, and classic travel literature. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
