Whole issue in original printed wrappers, mostly uncut & unopened. [iv] 311-561 [1] 15pp.; 7 plates (Plates XIX. - XXVI.) Jacob Augustus Lockhart Clarke (1817-1880) was an English physician, physiologist, histologist and neurologist. Clarke received his material edication at Guy's Hispital and St. Thomas's Hospital in London. He was liscenced by the Apothecaries Society and subsequently went to love with his mother at Pimlico, where he established a private practice. From 1851 to 1868, while Clarke was engaged in general practice and continuing his studies at St. George's Hospital, he conducted his now famous research on the central nervous system. "Most of his numerous works were published in in the Philosophical Transactions (1851, 53, 58, 59, 60, 65, 68), in the Proceedings of the Royal Society (1857, 61), the Microscopical Journal, British and Foreign Medical Review (1864) and others. His earlier works concern the anatomy and the physiology of the medulla oblongata and the spinal marrow as well as the brain. His discovery of the Clark's column, also designated nucleus dorsalis, was done in this period. His later research is more concerned with pathological studies in his special field. he also published on tetanus, diabetes, paraplegias of muscular atrophy. Clarke was described as a man of the highest character, "with s singleness of purpose, of noble independence, honest and just, conscientious and intellectually keen, but with a singularly retiring and reserved disposition. He never acquired a large practice and is reputed not to have been well off financially." (Whonamedit? Jacob Augustus Lockhart Clarke. Accessed 11/4/2022. ).

Lockhart Clakre. 5 (1851-1867) papers with superb illustrations by Clarke ALL are extracts from the "Philosophical Transactions" and includes: (1) "Researches into the structure of the spinal cord." Vol 141, 1851, pp 607-621, with six beautiful plates. Nice copy though the plates have some foxing the text is largely clean and crisp, but the plates didn't survive as well. This is a major paper by Clarke (and his first publication). Garrison Morton 1360. (2) "On certain Functions of the Spinal Cord, with further Investigations into its Structure. Vol 143 part III, 1853, pp 347-356, two plates (with pretty heavy foxing). Text is VG while plates are Fair. (3) "Researches on the Intimate Structure of the Brain, Human and Comparative First Series. On the Structure of the Medulla Oblongata." 1857pp 231-259, 5 plates of the Clarke drawings. (4) "Further Researches on the Gray Substance of the Spinal Cord." 1858, pp 437-467, 6 plates. Text is clean and crisp, the plates are only GOOD with some foxing. Still, artistry and exactness is stupendous. (5) "Researches on the Intimate Structure of the Brain Second Series. 1867, pp 263-331, 6 plates. [++] Clarke made important researches on the spinal cord. He described the nucleus dorsalis. He introduced the method of mounting sections with Canada balsam.--Garrison & Morton 1360. [++] "He became devoted to microscopical research on the brain and nervous system, and applying a new method, and proceeding with extreme care and thoroughness, he established many new facts of structure which had important bearings on the physiology and pathology of the nervous system. His first paper, "Researches into the Structure of the Spinal Cord", was received by the Royal Society on 15 October 1850, and published in their Transactions for 1851. It was illustrated, like many of his subsequent papers, by extremely accurate and valuable drawings by himself, and these have been subsequently reproduced in numerous works. [Clarke] received the Royal Medal of the Royal Society in 1861, and in 1867 he was elected an honorary follow of the King and Queen s College of Physicians, Ireland. Late in life, he attended St. George s Hospital and qualified as a surgeon, still later obtained the M.D. St. Andrews (1869), and became a member of the London College of Physicians (1871), and entered upon consulting practice in nervous diseases. He became physician to the Hospital for Epilepsy and Paralysis, but gained no great amount of practice, probably owing to his retired habits, and his having published no book by which the public could judge of his work. He died on 25 January 1880 from phthisis."--Wikipedia.

Paper received May 1, - Read May 23, 1867. "Abstracts of a considerable portion of this paper have been already published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society for June 18, 1857, and June 20, 1861, under the title of "Notes of Researches on the Intimate Structure of the Brain." After adding several new facts, and giving further explanations on the subject of the medulla oblongata, the author gives a full description of the morphological changes by which the auditory and other centres are developed out of elements of the spinal cord. The auditory centres consist of an outer and an inner nucleus. The outer nucleus is developed from the grey substance of the posterior pyramid and restiform body of the medulla. The inner nucleus arises between the posterior pyramid and the nucleus of the eighth cerebral nerve. From both these nuclei the posterior division of the auditory nerve takes its origin. The anterior division consists of two portions. The principal portion penetrates the medulla beneath the restiform body, and running along the outer side of the caput cornu, or grey tubercle, enters both the outer and inner nucleus. The other portion of the nerve runs, backward along the upper border of the restiform body, which it accompanies over the superior peduncle of the cerebellum to the inferior vermiform process. The outer auditory nucleus, consisting of the grey substance of the posterior pyramid and restiform body, is ultimately thrown backward into the cerebellum, part of it arching over the fourth ventricle to the opposite side, while the rest extends outward to the corpus dentatum of the cerebellum." Abstract - Proc. R. Soc. Lond.15 (1867): pp.509-510 Lockhart Clarke (1817-1880), English neurologist, carried on detailed investigations on the anatomy and histology of the central nervous system.
