Hardcover. Condizione: Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Good. vii, [3], 278 pages. Illustrations. Index. Some wear and small tears to DJ edges. Minor page soiling noted. Samuel Houston Johnson (January 31, 1914 - December 11, 1978) was an American businessman. He was the younger brother of President Lyndon B. Johnson. Sam Houston Johnson was administrative aide, troubleshooter, sounding board, and general counsel for his older brother. He was part of a network of supporters his brother used to maintain awareness of and control over political activities in Texas. When Lyndon Johnson was appointed Director of the National Youth Administration in Texas in the 1930s, Sam Houston Johnson replaced him as chief aide to Congressman Richard M. Kleberg. Sam Houston Johnson later worked for the National Youth Administration in Texas. He also worked for the Federal Land Bank in Houston, and reported to his brother on its activities. During World War II, Sam Johnson worked on the staff of the War Production Board. In addition, he was employed as a member of his brother's Senate staff, and worked on Lyndon Johnson's campaigns. Besides working for and with his brother, Sam Houston Johnson also worked as an insurance executive and as the Mexico representative of a Texas international trucking company. In 1970 Johnson wrote a memoir, My Brother Lyndon, which praised his brother in most respects, but was critical in others. At the time, Sam Houston Johnson indicated that he was estranged from his brother, but said his book was not the cause. The two reconciled before Lyndon Johnson's death. Derived from a Kirkus review: Sam Houston Johnson shoots straight, from the hip, and Lyndon Baines has been holding his breath. There's plenty of plain talk that'll stir up a storm, on the Pedernales, but Sam (or his editor) has stopped short of irreparable damage. In fact, the blunt portraiture by this lifelong Big Brother-watcher has an undeniable scrappy charm; his flesh-and-blood LBJ is far more appealing than the poker-faced President of solemn TV speeches. This Lyndon certainly has his shortcomings of temper and temperament, but he was the greatest legislative strategist of this century, and Sam sure has it in for the newspapermen and New Frontiersmen who gave him short shrift. Private enemy number one is Bobby Kennedy, though Sam confesses he was a real pro in politics, where "ambition and egotism are the twin names of the game," Along with the political snipes, there are personal touches: LBJ constantly scolding Sam for falling asleep with the light on, taking out his Presidential tensions in a brotherly domino game, assigning Sam a Secret Service agent to keep him on the up-and-up. Silent Sam's finally had his say. First Edition [stated], presumed first printing.

Prima edizione
Soft Cover. Condizione: Fine. First Printing. "Hamill, poet and principal editor of the prestigious Copper Canyon Press, has assembled a remarkable retrospective of the many labors of his little company. The list of poets offered here is almost staggering in its variety: Nobel Prize winners (Pablo Neruda and Odysseus Elytis); prominent American poets (Hayden Carruth, John Haines, W.S. Merwin, Carolyn Kizer, and James Laughlin); poets in translation (Jean Joubert, O.V. de L. Milosz, Sandor Csoori, and Su Tung-p'o); and poets beginning to come into their own (Eleanor Wilner, Shirley Kaufman, Timothy Liu, and Richard Jones). Hamill's taste, as reflected in these choices, honors a certain humility, an earthiness, in poetry. Hamill's introduction sketches the recent history of American poetry, of which Copper Canyon has been an important part; his notes are warmly percipient appreciations of the poets his press has fostered. This anthology will appeal strongly to all readers of contemporary poetry; highly recommended." Bright and fine condition with no markings.
